Have black screen of death. Been told need new motherboard?Win 10 was apparently the cause which I assume is on the hard drive. If can get MB how do I get rid of win 10 before it wrecks another MB or do I change the drive as well? Not a geek but capable of replacing all parts internally and following instructions. Simple advice please.Expensive kit to just dump as have been advised. Dell don't want to know as out of warranty!!

Hi there cavendish 3,

Well, I don't really think Win 10 could make your MOBO fail. Are you sure it's your MOBO that is causing the BSOD?

Apart from that, yes, if there was Win 10 installed on the HDD, it should still be there. You can easily reformat the drive before performing a clean OS installation through CMD the following way:

- once you are in Windows setup
- shift+F10 to bring up the command line.
- diskpart [enter]
- list disk [enter]
- select drive [number] [enter]
- clean all [enter]
- create partition primary [enter]
- select partition 1 [enter]
- active [enter]
- format fs=ntfs [enter]
- assign [enter]
- exit [enter]
- exit [enter]

Cheers,

Thanks for the info, will try that when and if I get something back on the screen. Reason suspect MOBO is that many other people have had same problem after installing Win 10. Dell say the computer not tested/compatible for XPS 2710. the Mobo is 'bricked' whatever that means. Difficult to source mobo. Dell want £200 plus lots for out of warranty repair when and if they get the motherboard--from China according to label. Others have said it is the graphics card (g Force) which is actually mounted on the mobo and not the normal plugin; this is solder job. Will keep posted in case others are having problem with this model. It looks likely that I have now a very large paperweight!!:??:
