- Running Prime95 v 26.6

This CPU should not be anywhere near as hot as it's running - I see people with my exact same cooler which is the Noctua DH-15, and CPU, that are reporting at least 10-20 degrees lower than where mine are.

Is this a problem with the heatsink itself?

I've re-applied thermal compound in so many different ways and times - pea size dot being the best results, yet still always heating up to around these same temperatures.

I do not want my parts to degrade and break easily.
Playing games like Resident Evil 7 on the PC has my temperatures on my CPU up to 55 degrees Celsius - which is unacceptable for the cooler I have.

My case has great direct airflow which should not be a factor in this case as it's only 1-2 degrees above ambient temperatures in my case at the most.

My ambient temperatures range from 20-22 C

Suggestions?

**Edit**
Lowering the Core voltage to 1.17 seemed to help the temperatures by a decent amount, I'm guessing it's just my luck of the draw with the CPU's I've gotten.
Thanks for all the responses and help, much appreciated.

Solution
Your board is putting more voltage than required for that speed.
For just the turbo speed you should be able to run it at 1.18/1.20
I have mine overclocked to 4.6 all cores on 1.22 volts.
Before changing any settings.
Download OCCT to stress the CPU and realtemp GT to check the temps.
Some versions of prime have a instruction set you will probably never use.

55C while gaming isn't that bad. Is it where that cooler is supposed to be? Maybe, maybe not. You may have just not "hit the silicon lottery" and could just have a hot running CPU. I personally wouldn't worry about it, but that's obviously up to you.

You should manually overclock your CPU to 4.4 Ghz that way it should run cooler and draw less power.I dont know why are you concerned about your temps when they are in perfectly safe zone and you dont need to worry about degradation.4790k will sooner become outdated before you ruin him with pretty high temps like 90+°C. 70°C under full load is more than acceptable even when you run prime95 latest version who is known to cause serious temps for intel CPU's.
I hope this link helps you as starting point with your overclock and tuning.

Those seem like stellar prime95 temps to me, my 4790k at 4.5ghz 1.275v would prob go 90+c during those tests with a kraken x62 running full blast.

I realize I could probably have less voltage but I got tired of bsod during gaming and my temps don't go above 70c during long gaming sessions so I'm alright with it for now.

occt and p95 are hard for me to pass, aida64 seemed more realistic for me for everyday use but I'm probably wrong.

Lowering the core voltage to 1.17 seemed to help it decently - Not where I'd prefer temps by comparison to others I've seen, but it'll have to do for now. Thanks all for the responses/help, much appreciated.

73c is not hot running p95, like everyone has said here that is nothing to worry about.

I just ran p95 26.6 for 5 minutes (small FFT's) and got 80+c, but in real world use and gaming I'm never going above 70c and I'm not concerned at all.

Why would you call temps under 60°C on 4790k high temps??
Those are low temp for Haswell based processors.
If you want lower temps there is one extreme solution to do and it is to delid CPU, but i dont recommend that if you haven't done it before and know how to do it without damaging CPU.
Your temps are perfectly safe and you dont have to worry about them.
