Hello, as the topic suggests I would like some opinions on whether I should upgrade my current CPU (i5 3470).
I was thinking of making the step up to the latest i5 Kaby Lake (7600) I am only going to be using my PC for gaming and do tend to play triple A games and will in the future. I am using a EVGA GTX970 SSC ACX 2.0 which was only bought in the last year so I was hoping to keep that for a few more months. So will there be much of a performance gain or should I hang on for a next Generation from Intel/AMD.
Thanks

Solution
I dont think it will last you for next 5 years like old i5 did.
In last 5 years games didnt use much cores but now almost every triple A use 4 or more cores and i5 is just getting maxd out easy.
If you really want to make upgrade, save a bit more and get i7 or new Ryzen CPU if they are good as AMD says they are.
I just cant recommend you at this point to go for i5 if you want it to last you 3-5 years and that you get 100% of your RIG in that time.

it is a upgrade, but it will force yo to buy ram, mainboard and cpu, not the cpu only

the cpu is socket 1155 but the new cpu is 1151 so it requires new mainboard, and the new mainboard needs ddr4 memory

for me, that is a new pc, not a upgrade

a upgrade would be a i7 for that mainboard you have

the next intel generation, afik, it will come next year or in the end of this year

amd next generation will be here in march more or less, but no idea how it will be so i can't tell you to wait for it and when it is here, you might get disappointed for waiting for something you don't find worth to buy

Sorry I should of mentioned that I understand about the new MOBO/RAM etc and have the budget to do that. I was wondering if it was suitable for me to buy a current gen CPU and if the performance benefit would be good enough to warrant it. As for the motherboard its a B75 chipset so I won't be able to overclock.
If I upgrade my CPU/Mobo it would hopefully last me for the next 5 years, judging by how my current one has lasted me.

Ok thanks for your answers, I will wait for the up coming Ryzen chips to be released or at least reviewed/benchmarked and decide between that and a i7 7700. Hopefully that will provide a few years longevity.
