I have an i7 4790k, with a GTX 970 FTW rig. I made a mistake and built on a mini-ITX footprint that restricted my GPU upgrades, so no SLI for me! For 2 years I've been unimpressed with my i7, its been very unstable compared to my older i5 2500k setup which never crashed to a BSOD. I'm a gamer, I used to play Elite with an Oculus and got the i7 to specifically play that game using VR, also games like Witcher3 at higher 4k resolutions and figured the i7+GTX would do okay. With these BSOD crashes its not been a great experience. I gave up trying to fix the BSODs, but heat, wattage don't appear to be the issue and I tried tracing the codes for ages and gave up. I figure my MOBO is bad. Anyway 2 years later I'm looking into getting a new setup.

I'm looking to buy a 1070 Founders Edition GPU, 32 GB DDR 4 RAM, with an M2 SSD at the core with a CPU and MOBO, which I'm on the fence about and would like advice. I've read a lot of reviews about CPUs and realize i7 is more application focused in its 8x threads and i5 is more tuned to gaming and competes on bench in the gaming segment quite decently. Wattage being less on i5, better experience with my trusty i5 2500k CPU I'm wondering if an i5 Kaby Lake/Skylake CPU would work with a good MOBO, or should I go for the latest generation i7 Kaby? Also what decent ATX Mobo would you recommend - I don't want to spend 400 on a Mobo, but I also don't want a BSOD situation again. So advice appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I would like to know what power supply you are using first ? I would suggest upgrading your psu to something higher grade. I like seasonic platinum. A bad psu could be causing your blue screens. Honestly i dont think sli is worth it being less and less game support it now plus sli flickering and micro stutter. My opinion start with your psu and work your way up. I am surprised your not happy with your 4790k. I love mine.

I changed it out actually and upgraded, not to that level but a good quality PSU and slightly more power and I still get crashes - they're not all the time but it happens occasionally. I find the Witcher crashes a lot but reducing down the resolution extends the the time between crashes.
