What will happen with an incompatible CPU and mb?

So the title says it. I built a PC and when I turn it on there's nothing on the monitor.

Now I know that could mean a billion things but I have checked every part by taking them out putting back in. Checked PC part picker everything was fine there except that the motherboard may need a BIOS update prior to using the CPU.

Now I did buy it out of stupidity, and the thing was That all the fans were spinning, LEDs on the fan were on, I could press the button on the disc drive and it would go out.

So yeah everything except that there's nothing on the monitor. Is that something an incompatible motherboard and cpu would do?

For those people interested
CPU: AMD Athlon x4 860k
MB: Asrock fm2a78 pro4+
RAM: 8gb
Psu: 450 Watts (Corsair and not broken)

And yes ram is inserted correctly with the correct ddr, everything is wired correctly, there's enough power for the system, the graphics card is plugged into the monitor although have tried mb too but there's no integrated gfx on the CPU. I have tried 2 GPUs so that shouldn't be the thing.
No beeping also with a working speaker being on the motherboard.

Thanks.

Going to sleep right now so I can answer only after a few hours after this is posted. So come some time later for some answers to questions if there's any.

Solution
Get the APU and update the BIOS and then try the CPU.

You didn't mention a GPU originally, so it was assumed that you were trying to use the integrated video adapter that is present with an APU, but not with the Athlon.

Also, when swapping with the APU. Check the CPU for bent pins. Good luck.

when a mainboard meets a cpu that doesn't know how to use, it will do what you see, nothing

you need a supported cpu on the mainbard, upgrade bios, then put back the cpu, it is what you need to do here

now, get a borrowed cpu for your mainboard will be the problem, you could return the mainboard if possible

is this the mainboard?

http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/FM2A78M-ITX+/

now, that is a itx mainboard, the cpu has no gpu integrated in it not a apu, and the mainboard for a fm2 cpu expects you to put a cpu with a gpu or a cpu and a gpu in the pci express x16 slot

what gpu did you installed?

Well, Sorry for the confusion folks. I wrote the Motherboards Model wrong. It's fm2a78 pro 4+.

And I checked the BIOS chip thing on the motherboard that shows the BIOS version and it says it's P1.20-15b. so I need to update it to P1.60 for it to work? Yes I know for an update I need an already working cpu. But with an integrated GPU? So for this motherboard a CPU with integrated graphics are required?

The GPUs I tested were radeon HD 5450 and Nvidia GT 8800. yes I know my graphics are a huge bottle neck, old but one of them definitely works so not the problem

I can get an AMD a4-5300 Apu. I'm sure it will work with it.

if you don't have a gpu, you need a cpu with a gpu inside, since you have that old 5450, you are fine, just be sure it is properly seated and working, then find borrowed a apu supported by that firmware, update and then forget about the problem

if you can return the mainboard, that will be easier for you
