Intel system driver broke my tablet (Atom Z3735E)

Hey guys,

I have a Windows 8.1 tablet (GoClever Insignia 800WIN, 8", Atom 3735E). I was foolish enough to install some Windows updates (should've known better), including 2 Intel driver updates, for the display adapter and for the 'system'. I had some issues with power management so I hoped those might fix it.

Instead, everything beyond the basics stopped working: no touchscreen, no battery monitoring, no other sensors, can't change display brightness etc. etc.

Unfortunately, system restore appears to be disabled so I can't go back easily.

I can now tell other people have had the problem as well, but I can't seem to find the right answer. How do I remove the update, or how do I reinstall the right driver?

There's nothing on Intel site for this platform and none of the important-looking devices in the Device manager (PCI, CPU etc.) have a driver rollback option. In fact the Device Manager now contains some Celeron and Pentium CPU stuff instead.

Any advice apart from reinstalling? I'd very much like to avoid that.

Update: So I realized I actualy have a reasonably recent backup, but I'd still like to know how to fix an issue like this, for geeky reasons. Maybe it can help someone else one day.

You should only install drivers for that tablet from the GoClever website and you shouldn't be updating drivers anyway in a "stab in the dark" fashion in the hope that it will fix a problem without first doing research (such as asking on forums before you install anything).

Well telling me what I should've done doesn't really help you know. GoClever has jack s... on their download site and they don't respond to emails, as I've learned before already.

One would think that after 15 or so years Microsoft would know which drivers to offer, especially since I always wait at least several weeks before I actually install them.

1. System Restore. Since that seems to be disabled, this won't work.
2. Whatever backup you've created before this happened.
3. Full reinstall of the system.

We've all been through this at least once. System is in a totally unrecoverable state.
This is when you learn the value of good backups.

Right, I could actually restore a backup, I completely forgot about that option, haha (I've never needed to restore a backup).

Anyway, I'd still like to try to install the right driver if possible, if for nothing else than just to know if it can be fixed at all. Any clue how to find the right one? I mean I'm pretty sure Windows keeps all the drivers that's been installed at some point. I was always able to fix these kinds of issues on a desktop, I just don't have enough experience with these SoC thingies.

I'm thinking I could try to remove all the system devices from the DM and let Windows reinstall the drivers, but I'm worried it would just reinstall the crap again.
