I recently had an issue with my motherboard. I purchased different RAM to see if that was the issue and it was not so I ended up doing an RMA. My question is, Can I use the two 4gb sticks of 2133 DDR4 with the new ones that I bought which are 2400 DDR4. This would give me a total of 16gb of RAM and i figured it would help if I could use all 4 sticks. Keep in mind that my motherboard only supports up to 2133.

Yes I have used the correct DIMM slots for my mother board , 2 and 4. I start with one stick in 2 and then add the second stick into the fourth dimm

Solution

Thats exactly what I just suggested, twice.

However if that does work, that means the other channel does not work, and your board is still bad.

you could try this it might work use one ram module at the time the use cpuid on the on the spd tab take note of the jedec settings for both ram module then use the lowest speed on and put un manualy the jedec that they are close to each other then try the new one in you may have to use new one first and old one in secoond channel .

If each stick works individually, and they're rated for different speeds you didn't buy them as a kit, then there's a chance they won't play well together. Mixed sticks aren't guaranteed and the faster the RAM the less chance mixed sticks will work. Options are try lowering the settings wherever you can get into the bios, then try both sticks with the lowest settings you can, you can also sell the sticks and buy a matched set. One of the mods here is good at getting mixed sticks to work, but I don't remember which one. His advice is the same though, buy matched sets.

Now, you have stated you have tried the RAM individually. By that did you take the 2 4gb 2133 mhz DIMMs and install them into 2 channels of your board (the slots marked DIMM 2 and DIMM 4 should be the ones you use)?

Please confirm you have tried that.

OK and all 4 DIMMS individually have been tested and they are functional is that right as well?

One other thing can you try DIMMs in DIMM 1 and DIMM 2, make sure you use a matched pair (2133 mhz).

I have not tested each individual DIMM yet and I won't be able to into until this afternoon. Once I am home I will test each individual DIMM slot. And yes, I have checked to make sure that I am using he same frequency of ram when I insert them into 2 and 4

No need to test each individual slot. Just test each memory module and make sure the computer boots with each one, in DIMM 2.

If it does you will have confirmed the memory is not bad.

Then I would like you to try inserting matching DIMMS into DIMM 1 and DIMM 2 slots.

Honestly here if the memory is not bad, the only other things could be the motherboard or the CPU. The CPU being bad is highly unlikely. So that leaves the motherboard.

Memory in a motherboard is pretty simple especially when using 2133 mhz memory, it either works or it doesn't theres no switches or tricks to it. So if we go through this and we know the memory is good. Its time to RMA your motherboard.

I really don't want to RMA my motherboard a second time, I just got it back from MSI on Monday. I will be severely upset if it is a motherboard malfunction. I had to pay $20 just for shipping it all the way out to California. If this is the case and I need to RMA the board a second time, I will probably just use the 4gb until I have enough money to get a new motherboard.

Sorry, seems likely to me. Like I said memory is a pretty simple part it either works or it doesn't and if this memory is definitely confirmed working, then it has to be the board.

If I may recommend, you have a 6600k, if you get a new board get a Z170 based board, this way you can overclock it.

I was just recommended by my school instructor to put both RAM sticks into Channel A which would be DIMMs 1 and 2. I'm gonna give it a go and see if that works once I get home.
