I am looking to upgrade the memory in my ML350 G8 Server (Part no. 646678-001). Its running dual Xeon 6C E5-2640 2.50GHz processors and currently has 16 GB ram (4 x 4GB chips). The server has a total of 24 slots with 20 empty (4 being utilized). The way I read what HP says on the specs sheet, I can run up to 96 GB memory. Therefore, I should be able to add 20 - 4GB chips to get me the 96 GB of ram. Is this correct or will it not be recognized by the processors. Is there a better configuration I should be looking into? I realize these servers can hold up to 768 GB (24 x 32GB), but this isn't necessary for us. I'm a little confused so any help would be greatly appreciate here. Thanks!

Solution
You must have an ML350p G8 it is the only version with 24 DIMM slots.

From the HP Quickspecs:
DIMM Slots Available 24

Maximum Capacity (LRIDMM)
768GB (24 x 32GB LRDIMM @1866MHz)

Maximum Capacity (RDIMM)
384GB (24x 16GB RDIMM @1866MHz)

Maximum Capacity (UDIMM)
128GB (16 x 8GB UDIMM @1866MHz)

NOTE: LRDIMM, RDIMM and UDIMMs are all distinct memory technologies and cannot be mixed within a server.

So the max memory depends on what TYPE of DIMM you get.
If you want more RAM then you have to get Registered (RDIMM) or load reduced (LRDIMM).
