Hello Everyone,

This is my first post here, i have searched all the threads and google about my problem but couldnt find a solution so i wanted to ask here.

First my specs;

Asus Maximus IX Code Mobo
Intel i7 7700K Processor
Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB SSD
Seagate BarraCuda ST3000DM008 3TB HDD
Corsair RM 850x PSU

I assembled everything as follows;

SATA Port 1 : SSD
SATA Port 2 : HDD
SATA Port 3 : DVD

SSD and HDD Powered by same sata power cable with 4 connectors, cable is this;

I Installed windows on SSD (AHCI) then windows booted, everything works, i did a few restarts at this point and windows boots with no problems, the only problem is HDD is not detected in windows and also not detected in BIOS, i then installed motherboard drivers, PC restarted and it will not boot, the circling dots spin all the time, i did a few manual resets and the PC went into diagnose and recovered windows to just after install system restore point. Now PC boots again but drivers are rolled back.

Then to check if HDD is working i did the following;

- Unplugged both sata power and sata cable from the HDD and plugged the same connectors to SSD, System boots so power and data cable not faulty.

- Plugged the SSD to all 6 Sata ports on Mobo one by one, all boots without problem so sata ports on mobo not faulty.

- Plugged just HDD without SSD connected, the HDD spins i can hear it but again BIOS does not see it.

- Plugged HDD to different Sata Ports, used different Sata cables, again no HDD detected.

Note: At a point i went to BIOS and saw there is some type of EZ Tuning Wizard, there is a RAID section, there when i choose Sata it asks me if i want to change from AHCI to Sata i click YES Pc restart and now again at this section I can see the HDD model number ST3000DM008 but cant proceed, it just lists the HDD. Also when i did this the HDD is still not detected in the BIOS, it just shows in this particular EZ Tuning Wizard.

Then considering the HDD is at least being recognized by some part of the PC this cannot be a hardware problem, so i put everything back as i did in the start (Sata1 SSD, Sata2 HDD, Sata3 DVD) then started windows. Went to disk utility and there it asked me that i should initialize the drive, it also ask me MBR or GPT, i go with default and click yes. Then i receive error, Request could not be performed because of an I/O device error

At this point frustration kicks in so i decide to do a new clean install of windows without plugging the HDD this time, before formatting i downloaded the latest bios update for my mobo and installed it.

So this time i unplug the sata data cable from the HDD and proceed to install, everything is smooth as expected, i install mobo drivers again, this time only i installed the SATA controller (intel 200 family sata ahci controller) from ASUS website.

All is good now everything working, did several restarts to check if system boots and all good, very fast boot with no problems, time to plug in the HDD, i turn off the PC, plug in the Sata cable to Sata Port 3 on mobo and hit power on..... The circle keeps spinning, no boot, 5 mins.. nothing.. i manually reset, again it is the same no boot.

I tried to change the sata ports HDD is connected to again and nothing happens, problem is still there, No HDD in Bios either.

When i go and disable the sata port that HDD is connected from bios, windows boots fine.

So at my first install HDD could be plugged in with SSD at the same time and windows would boot even if HDD is not detected in BIOS and Windows (But can be seen at Disk Utility but cannot be initialized due to I/O Device Error)

But at my second install windows would not boot if the HDD is plugged in and it wont boot unless i unplug the sata cable manually or disable the sata port its connected from BIOS (Also cannot check if it can be seen at disk utility as system will not boot when its plugged in)

Sorry for wall of text and language mistakes, English is not my main language.

I dont know what to do, maybe i used the wrong sata power cable? (1 cable with 4 connectors, there is also another with 3 connectors but i did not try because i thought it is unlikely as HDD spins when PC is turned on)

I am really out of options here and i hope you guys can shed some light on this issue, i would like to thank you all who read/reply to this.

Solution
did you reset bios to defaults when you upgraded bios? its possible the raid settings are still running.

Is windows boot manager the top choice in boot order?

Does hdd work in any other PC?

Hello Colif;

Second installation (after bios update) is also done to the SSD as AHCI, so no raid. And i never activated the raid as the EZ Tuning Wizard in bios only lists the HDD and does not allow me to do anything (Next button is not highlighted so i cant go any further)

Yes windows boot manager is top boot device, second boot device is DVD.

I cannot test the HDD on another PC yet.

So you are suggesting;

I unplug both SSD and HDD
Turn on the PC
Plug in the SSD and HDD (In that order?)

Then what? Hit reset?

Also its not dangerous to plug in Sata cables when pc is running?

Plus the BIOS wont even see the HDD, so how can it be a boot order related problem?

Unplug power and unplug both drives,
start PC.. turn it off once it gets no where.
Unplug PC again,
reattach both ssd & hdd and it should rebuild the boot order

I assumed you knew not to unplug it while running (guess I shouldn't have)

Okay, I thought it might have been the Windows Boot Manager had the hdd in its list of devices to boot from and I thought this might reset it and allow it to boot. Without knowing if HDD actually works, I was just trying to offer a choice. windows Boot Manager over rules the boot order and might have the hdd in its records.

Hello Again,

Well i am not home right now so i cant try now but i will later.

Meanwhile i called asus support and they told me to do this;

Go To Bios > Boot > Boot Override > Os Type > Select "Other Os"

Then

Boot Option #1 > Select SSD

They told me this should fix it but i dont know, another representative told to do something Security > LAN CSM ENABLE?? could not her him well and phone got disconnected after.

SOLVED!

Just a quick update,

Reason was faulty HDD!

I plugged in an ancient WD 200 GB HDD in and it was detected.
Also tried the 3TB Faulty HDD on another old PC with windows on it, again windows stuck at loading.

Got a replacement that i will plug in today!

Thanks Colif!
