Hi.
So I'm planning on upgrading my RAM for Battlefield 1, but I have a question; initially I was planning on upgrading to 16GB (currently have 8GB), but then I realised that the price would be significantly cheaper (at least in my country) if I just added an extra 4GB, which leads to my question:

Will adding 4GB (8GB + 4GB, thus becoming dual-channel) really be different than adding 8GB in this game? Or will simply having dual-channel RAM be enough (as that's what I've read before).

Cheers.

[P.S]
CPU: i5-4460
GPU: Planning on getting a GTX 1060 3GB

Solution
It's become more desirable to purchase RAM in kits these days. There is no guarantee that adding a single 4GB RAM (or 8GB) RAM module to your current system will give you the desired results (12GB or 16GB of RAM). If the chips are not compatible, you will still only have 8GB of usable RAM. Save yourself the possible headache and just get a 16GB (2x8GB) RAM Kit.

Solution
If you add the same stick you already own it usually works. Done so myself 2 times so far, never had an issue.
However as wolf said, it's not guaranteed.

So if you're on a budget try getting the exact same 8GB stick you already own.
Otherwise buy a kit, sell your existing stick.

Unfortunately getting a kit won't exactly be an option, as I already have one 8GB stick and I won't be able to sell it (some issues). I will be going to a store and bringing my PC along when buying the extra RAM, so I'd assume the sellers would understand which would work, and if the one they would sell me doesn't work, they could simply replace it then and there (as I'm having them upgrade the PC for me).

Just a question, how do I find out the exact brand/version/etc of my current RAM?

RAM usually has the mfg and model and/or part numbers on a sticker right on it.
If it doesn't, go to Crucial.com and run the scanner and it will tell you the specs of the RAM you have and then just make sure you buy RAM with the same specs.

Alright I appreciate all your tips, and will be trying my best to either get a kit or get the same RAM. As previously stated anyway, I'm having my PC upgraded in-the-store. So if something goes wrong, I'd only assume they'd replace the RAM for me. I've sent them a message to confirm.

Could someone please answer my original question now? Say 4GB or 8GB of added RAM works, will there be a difference in performance (12GB vs 16GB)? Or does it only matter that I have dual-channel RAM? I'd like an answer for Battlefield 1. Thanks!

12GB vs 16GB - Not likely to be any difference in performance unless you have a lot of other programs running in the background.
Single Channel vs Dual Channel - Dual channel allows for more paths of communication, so you should see some improvement there.

Edit: That's not game specific.

You never actually said if you have 2 4GB sticks now or a single 8 so I am assuming single 8. If you add a single 4 to that you will get dual channel for the first addressable 8 gigs (4 on each stick) and the remaining 4 gigs will still be single channel. This is all assuming it works as 4 gig and 8 gig sticks often have different timings. If it does work, you will be faster somewhat but the ram beyond 8 gig will still be single channel so the benefits are likely not that great.

The best way to do it technically is to get another stick exactly the same as your current one or to replace your current one with a 2*8gig kit. If adding a 4 gig is your only option it will probably improve BF1 performance somewhat even if it can't operate in dual channel but it won;t help much in anything else so far.
