I have just built my new computer with a RX 480 GPU with 8GB of GDDR5. I also have my AMD 880k CPU Overclcked to 4.5ghz and I have 16gb of ddr3 ram at 1800mhz and I have tried to play gta v at high settings but only been able to gain around 20 fps please help?

the only way around it would be to get a better CPU

It is unfortunate that you built using an obsolete motherboard platform.
GTAV tends to be single threaded and cpu limited.
The single thread passmark rating for your cpu is 1609. Add a bit for the overclock.

By comparison, a $65 Intel G4560 has a rating of 2018.

You would need a $50 lga1151 motherboard and $35 for DDR4 ram.

I doubt thet the upcoming Ryzen processors will start that low.

i think you could also get away with upgrading to a 4th gen intel core CPU and motherboard too. at least with a 4th gen intel CPU you would be able to reuse your DDR3 ram to save a couple bucks

I could only overclock my GPU to 2100mhz otherwise if I go any higher it would crash my computer.

Gya:V is a cpu killer. It's optimized for 5-8 core use, with a minimum of 4. Even i5's have problems with higher settings, no matter the gpu. It's entirely possible, once you start adding mods, to bog down an i7-7700k. So it's not surprising that your 880k is in a frenzy. OC helps, but only so much. An i7-4790(k) or Xeon 1230v3 would be a good place to start, enabling reuse of the ddr3. Being an APU, with a good chunk of the die dedicated to the gpu, the 880k gets shortchanged as it is, actually performing worse than the older FX. You'll have to decide just how much this game means vrs rearranging your pc.

Are you trolling? I mean, your way to fix this is just to buy a new CPU? Brainless answers FTW. I was running GTA V with AMD fx 8370 and a Sapphire r9 280 Dual-X OC, 16gb RAM at 1600mhz with a 750w power supply silver plus and running the game very smooth with 50fps average on high/very high settings but upgrading my GPU to a Sapphire Nitro+ RX580 LE made me to have around 15-25fps as average. We want a solution, not an advertising of the new CPU's. Thanks :D
Silly example:
-User: My car it's having fuel injectors problems.
-Mechanic: No worries, let's just change the whole engine and it will be fixed :D

It's a straight fact that GTA V is CPU-hungry. I went with the highest AMD CPU I could get when I built my computer, and thanks to that I have no issues with GTA V. The CPU the OP here chose isn't as powerful. That's a straight fact as well.

You also say that "upgrading to a new GPU cut your FPS." That's...EXACTLY what people have been saying. The GPU is too much for the CPU to deal with effectively, so you need to upgrade your CPU as well.

To re-use your analogy, you've taken a car with a V6 that can go 140 MPH, dropped in a V10, but didn't change out the fuel lines or pumps or the drivetrain or anything else. You're now only able to go 100 MPH because the V10 isn't getting enough fuel from the old V6's fuel system, and the transmission is about to explode from the excessive torque the V10 still manages to put out even fuel-starved.

Simply put, the op's system was pretty well balanced at purchase, but due to games advancements, it now requires a better gpu. Well that's easy enough, but the issue isn't that the cpu all of a sudden became an anchor, it's that the gpu is far more powerful than before and the user has a tendency to up the detail settings a few notches. This is what's killing the cpu. The higher the details, the higher the demand on the cpu. With that, Op has a choice, lower the cpu dependent settings like viewing distance, hairworks, physX etc or upgrade the cpu to meet the demands. Unfortunately, that Athlon II X4 is for all intents and purposes nothing more than an fx 4300 with higher IPC, and while OC helps a lot, it's still a very budget cpu that's stuck with limitations of the Fm2+ sockets. The A10-7850k would be the best available in that respect
