Hi,

I have a i7 4790k 4 ghz Air cooled cpu and I am wondering if I should be worried if my PC strikes 78 degrees unclocked during stress test on program: Intel Extreme Tuning Ability

Running normally on 35-50 Degrees
During Benchmarking on Intel program the Package Temp lands on 60-67 Constant up n down.
Is that bad?

To the big question.. Can I overclock my CPU?

I just added new Thermal Paste and it has added a big boost. But before that my PC would get Blue screen and top 85-90 degrees unclocked Stress test.

I need to overclock my PC for it to handle the game: Counter Strike.. But is it possible?
What should my Package Temp be at max to not destroy anything, how much should I boost my cores?

Thanks for answering!

How high you can overclock depends on your luck in getting a good chip.

I like OCCT as a stress tester. It uses more normal instructions. IBT and prime95 do not, and they generate more heat.
OCCT will shut down your test at 85c.

Under actual usage, the chip will slow down or shut down when it reaches a dangerous temperature, that is around 100c.

I am using the Stock cooler indeed.
I assume I need to buy a new cooler in order to overclock and have a fluent running PC, water cooled perhaps?

Does every Watercooler fit my CPU or do I need a specific one.
Thanks!

Yeah don't OC on the stock cooler. Most, if not all, AIO will come with different mounting brackets for different sockets so really it's all about rad size for the best cooling when it comes to AIO liquid coolers. There are also great air coolers out there for a lot cheaper if you'd prefer that route.

The noctua nh-d15 is an excellent choice (air)
If you are going the AIO water cooling route then the corsair h100i is a popular choice along with NZXT's Kraken line of coolers.

I might suggest one of the new s variants from noctua.
NH-U12s, NH-U14s, NH-D15s.
They are redesigned to clear tall ram heat spreaders and are offset so as to not interfere with graphics cards.
As to liquid cooling:
My canned rant on liquid cooling:
------------------------start of rant-------------------
You buy a liquid cooler to be able to extract an extra multiplier or two out of your OC.
How much do you really need?
I do not much like all in one liquid coolers when a good air cooler like a Noctua or phanteks can do the job just as well.
A liquid cooler will be expensive, noisy, less reliable, and will not cool any better
in a well ventilated case.
Liquid cooling is really air cooling, it just puts the heat exchange in a different place.
The orientation of the radiator will cause a problem.
If you orient it to take in cool air from the outside, you will cool the cpu better, but the hot air then circulates inside the case heating up the graphics card and motherboard.
If you orient it to exhaust(which I think is better) , then your cpu cooling will be less effective because it uses pre heated case air.
And... I have read too many tales of woe when a liquid cooler leaks.
google "H100 leak"
I would support an AIO cooler only in a space restricted case.
-----------------------end of rant--------------------------

Your pc will be quieter, more reliable, and will be cooled equally well with a decent air cooler.

Interesting.. Thank you guys so much for the information!

So you think I should buy a better air cooler so I can overclock?

I have atm 90 FPS in csgo.. I need 280-300 Constant or it's nearly impossible to preform at top.

I don't have a top budget so, i'd prefer the best but cheapest to overclock with.
I noticed that Liquid cooling is hella expensive ( in my circumstances ) -- Id prefer air but acapable of preforming better than my current one.

Thanks!

I would check and see if you can find it cheaper elsewhere like jet.com if not it's really up to you, but air cooling seems to be the best way to go if you aren't doing a custom loop. Is it more expensive than the NZXT ones or just the h100i, because here the h100i goes for about $120+ and the dh15s sits at about $80ish?

Reguardless I would still choose the d15s because it makes less noise and has a negligible temperature difference over the h100i.

I am forever grateful! I will go for the d15 whenever my economy allows it!
Many bows and pray it will fix my issues.. cuz atm I have 90-150 fps, even restarts pc..

it must be my cooler, the basic "shit" arriving with the CPU itself.

If I buy this I should be able to OC and boost my pc to preform 300 fps!

I don't think overclocking your cpu a couple hundred mhz will give you a huge fps boost, maybe 10-20 fps? Seems like your video card is the issue, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Just don't want him to buy a cpu cooler to overclock his cpu and not have it solve his problem.

Hey thank you for that!

CSGO isn't Video card based if I am correct?
I have a gtx 970.

If I clock my PC through BIOs quick ( Optimal settings ) - I get 300 fps but bluescreens now and then.

Could be a sign of overheating since I can't stress my CPU.

But, if suggestions come up i am glad to try them!

You mean BIO's overclocking?
I will youtube for tutorial then! thanks alot!
