To start im new to builds and may completely be off on some of my choices so be nice haha
so here's the deal i am upgrading a gaming pc on a budget and here is what im currently running.
750ti
i34150
Asus H81M-D PLUS Micro ATX LGA1150
2x 4gb ddr3 ram
1tb 7200rpm hhd
430w corsair psu
it was a budget build that worked like an absolute champ for awhile but its starting to be out of date
i started with the GPU, i got a REALLY good deal on a evga 1060 3 gb
so i started to build towards this:
1060 3gb
i5 6600k
MSI Pro Solution Intel Z170A LGA 1151 DDR4 USB 3.1 ATX
2x 4gb ddr4
500w evga psu
1tb 7200 rpm hhd
I still wasn't satisfied with the amount id have to spend on that build though and began doing research on current mobos that would support ddr3 without breaking my wallet, that way i could reuse my ram and save a good $60 right there, i found the ASRock ATX DDR3 1066 Motherboards FATAL1TY Z170 GAMING K4/D3
i would like to overclock the 6600k as well because it seems that's half the point of that card, i already have an evo 212 to handle the heat
this left me with this build
1060 3gb
i5 6600k
ASRock ATX DDR3 1066 Motherboards FATAL1TY Z170 GAMING K4/D3
2x 4gb ddr3
500w evga psu
1tb 7200 rpm hhd

my research has told me that the ddr3 is almost completely identical performance wise to the ddr4
so is it worth the $50 saved to go with the ASRock over the asus performance wise? or is the asus going to perform far better and i should just go ahead and get it with the ddr4 ram? also is there any other tweaks i should make to this build?
thanks,
Argent

Solution
Don't use DDR3 on a lga1151 board.
It only supports. DDR3L (=low voltage)
Regular DDR3 fries the CPU.

You could just stick to your board and go for a 4670/4770 (or 4690/4790 if your board is compatible)
That would save even more money. The performance difference is there but it's still a substantial upgrade.
