Hi everyone

I have Asus RX480 8GB o/c edition, with an i7 6700K at stock and 16GB of system ram.
AMD Radeon drivers installed are the latest Crimson 17.1.1 on a new o/s installation so no leftovers from previous cards or systems.

The resolution currently (I am limited by the monitor) is 1680X1050 and the connection is DVI.
O/S is Windows 7 Ultimate x64.
I checked the frames using FRAPS

I tried two games that I already have, Dragon Age Inquisition and Skyrim.

In Dragon Age during black screens, menus etc the FRAPS reports fps like 100, 150 etc.
During game however the frames are stuck at 49. I have set everything to High, Medium, Low and still the frames are stuck at 49. It is like there is a limiter or cap, something like Vsync but I didn't find such an option in Game options. The game runs smoothly, no fps drops, the only problem is that frames at stuck at 49.

In Skyrim during gaming the frames are stuck at 59-60. Irrespective of open areas or within dungeons, rooms etc, again no frame drops, no shuttering, only frames stuck at 60.
The game was tested with everything at High and Medium and still FPS stuck at 60.
I couldn't find also an Vsync option in game.

A last point during gaming with these two, I don't hear the 3 fans from the gpu so I believe they are either stopped due to low temps or are turning at really low revs again due to low temps.
At idle the gpu with gpu-z reports 40-44 degrees celcious and both gpu clock and gpu memory clocks are idling.

Is there a Vsync option or limiter within the AMD Crimson 17.1.1 drivers that cap the fps in games? I couldn't find such a thing that's is why I am puzzled and frustrated because I would expect with this pc components and with these two old games, the frames should have been around 80 or at least moving around, up and down during the game.

Any insight or feedback will be helpful.

Thanks!!!

It looks like a software FPS cap indeed.

Yes, Crimson drivers have both vsync AND a relatively new feature called "frame rate target control". They are both used to lock framerate, but the second method usually works better, since it does not introduce input lag.

Vsync can be found at Gaming>Global Settings>Wait for Vertical Refresh. Disable it if enabled.

As for FRTC, it is the last option under Gaming>Global Settings>Overdrive.

Well I haven't a clue why dragon age is running at 49fps, thats odd the engine is certainly not limited to 49fps I played it when it came out and I definitely was not locked to 49fps. There should be options for all kinds of different vsync options in crimson though I am not sure where, they should not be enabled by default however and should not limit the fps to 49 unless your monitor is running at 49hz.

As for skyrim thats fine, you do not want to run the skyrim engine at over 60fps it causes lots of weird physics issues, it can break quests because required NPCs wont do what they are supposed to do, you will see flying cows and all sorts of weird stuff. You can disable it by setting ipresentinterval=1 to ipresentinterval=0 in the skyrim.ini. But I would not recommend it.

Thanks for your answer.

Regarding Skyrim I didn't know this. In my old pc because of low specs I was playing at medium or adjusted with fps around 45 and I didn't think about it.
Concerning Dragon Age I am puzzled. I also assumed that such limitation options vsync would normally be off in Crimson or somehow be able to override but I cannot find such a menu/option.

Crimson reports the monitor as 59.98hz refresh rate so it shouldn't be the limiting factor for Dragon Age.

Thank you also for your reply my friend.
Currently I am not in front of the pc so I cannot check the options you describe. When I will be, I'll try to play around and see if they are indeed active, what they say and if by shutting them off Dragon Age reports actual/normal frames.

I will come back with an update and feedback on how things worked.

The options you mentioned were there. The vsync was "off unless the app requests differently" and the FRTC was off.
Crimson had also created a profile for Dragon Age (perhaps last night that I was testing it) and the vsync option was the same.
I set both vsyncs to "Off always" and relaunched the game but still capped fps.

Then I decided to go again line by line within game options. Et voila. I guess I was too tired last night I didn't see it.
There was an option under display menu, not graphics, saying Vsync and was ticked. The moment I un-ticked it the frames spiked up and now range from 75 to 95 with an average around 80, with everything High.

Thanks again for the details in the Crimson menus. Might come handy in the future!
