Main SSD slower after adding a second SSD

My first SSD is a PNY 240GB Optima.
ATTO benchmarks writes/reads around 230/430MB/s when the drive is alone in my build. After I installed the second SSD, a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB, the PNY now writes/reads at 170/340. That's a 25-29% descrease in performance. If I remove the second SSD speeds fo back up. Any ideas why this is happening?

It's an old Asus Z77a with 2 SATA 6GB and 4 SATA 3GB ports. The SSDs are connected to the 6GB ports. 16GB of DDR3.

Yes. Samsung drive is much faster. Reads/Writes around 500MB/s. I switched the cables to see If anything would change but everything is the same. Even my HDD Western Digital on sata Port 3GB is going faster than the PNY SSD.

Yes, everything is up to date.

I found the problem but still can't figure out why it happens.
I disconnected and reconnected all the cables attached to the motherboard and the problem was solved. PNY back to 320/480 read/write speeds (according to ATTO) and boot time was normal again.
After a couple days the problem returned and this time was even worse. Speeds dropped to 70/100 MB/s. Yes, even worse than an HDD drive.
This time instead of removing all the cables I just unplugged the 2 main ones that power the motherboard (EATX 24 pin) and the processor (EATX 8 pin). Again, on the next boot the SSD was back to normal.
Doesn't matter if the PNY is plugged to SATA connector 1 or 2 (both 6GB/s) it will always deliver less than optimal speeds after a couple of days.
Nothing else seems to be affected by this problem.

Any ideas?

The only thing that comes to mind is that SATA data cable you use is no longer in good-enough shape.

No, that's not it.
I switched cables between the PNY and the EVO and there was no change in performance.
The PNY kept going slow and the EVO kept going very fast.

It's two and a half years old and it's not even half full.

The EVO is actually older (almost 4 years), has less free space and it's not going thru this.
