Would this be competitive with current-gen console? I am not interested in graphical fidelity, only smooth performance. If possible, are there any other better deals that anyone knows of that I can look into?

An A4 will not play any newer games at playable frame rates, not even on low settings. A10 may at low. A gaming laptop is probably about a $700+ part. Something with a 960m video card is just about the lowest you want, 950m maybe to stick with low settings at 720 resolution.

The system you listed is OK for basic tasks, videos, music, email, some older games, non-demanding games. Something like LOL would run on low settings on that thing at abut 40 fps, maybe 60.
