I am toying with adding another monitor to my machine*, I have a free DVI-D port but only have a VGA monitor to test out with, what would the best adapter setup? active DVI-D to VGA would be the cleanest, but I was thinking DVI-D to HDMI and HDMI to active VGA in case i upgrade to a better monitor in the future. or would i need to do DVI-d to active HDMI and then HDMI to active VGA?

if all works well this should become monitor #6, yes i left out motherboard and gpu specs because if that is the conflict, i wont mind, i am more concerned about getting the adapters right in this post. already on monitor #4 setup now

*no, i am not doing it for gaming, no i am not using max resolution, this is more of a wouldn't it be neat to......idea, most likely a 1280x1024 monitor

Is the VGA port for your iGPU already in use? If not, that's the easiest way to go.
Depending on your supply inserting a 2nd graphics card might also be an easy solution.
Besides that use as few adapters as possible. More will only be more points of failure, might increase latency and could degrade image quality.
