i can get a msi gtx 980 ti gaming 6gb at a good price, my motherboard is: Asus M5A99X Evo, my processor is: AMD FX-8120.
Now I use a R9 290 gpu. (i think it doesn't bottleneck now)

It will most likely bottleneck is what i've understood by now (new to this).
Now my question is
Should i replace both, processor and motherboard, processor only, neither?

I dont want to spend a ton more. But I love to get best value for my money too :)

EDIT: processor usage in RUST is around 50 percent only. GPU clock and memory full.
In battlefield 1 CPU is normally about 70 , GPU clock full, rest 50-80%

Solution
In a situation like this, I'd go for the GTX 980Ti and wait for Ryzen CPUs to release. Yes, you will suffer with the bottleneck, but Ryzen CPUs are just around the corner and I'm sure it's not expensive to upgrade to an AM4 motherboard as well.
