Hello Members, thanks for looking at this post, hope you guys don't mind how long this is

Looking for some advice, as the title suggests.

I have been using the same computer that I first built in late 2013/ early 2014 and have been running the same Graphics card since, an Asus GTX 680 Direct CU II Oc model, the card has served me well for the last 3-4 years, safe to say I got my monies worth :D

It's only the last year or so with new games coming out as an example MGS Phantom Pain, Witcher 3, Titanfall 2, BF One, and perhaps the up coming Mass Effect and the latest graphics patches for World of Warships/tanks are things not looking as good as they use to.

Hence I'm looking for an upgrade- to my next GPU

I've got on 1 corner friends telling to get the older GTX980 or 980ti models, for saving money and on the other side of the ball park I have people saying you should get the latest and greatest from Nvidia the 1070 or 1080 models.

My main priority is the GPU, as it stands, I think I can get at least 2 maybe 3 or push it 4 years of life with the main components, or in another way to put it 2-4 generation of GPU's before a complete new build, I mean I have lasted this long with a 680, I can guess I can get more life out the PC

My computer as it stands has the following specifications-

CPU- I7 3960X
Motherboard- Asus RIVE
Ram- 16gb
Storage- Sandisk Ultra II 480 ssd boot disk and Seagate Barracuda 3tb hdd generic
GPU - Asus GTX 680
Monitor- Samsung 1920 by 1080

Just to recap-
1,) 1080 gaming only at the moment (may supersample if card and monitor can handle it)

2,) An Asus varient GPU- Strix model (have had great experience with all my asus products)

3,) Budget allowance- any - will make room for higher price range.

4, ) Optional personal oponion- to last as long as my 680 has lasted me. 3-4 years

Solution
I would go with a GTX 1060. Will run practically any game on Ultra at 1080p.

the EVGA superclocked 6gb version, runs at 1607 MHz . Spend the extra like 80$ and get the 6gb over the 3gb. It's worth it. If you can't handle the wattage, (500w) then I would recommend the 1050 Ti.

And this is the ASUS model. 6Gb runs at 1590 MHz

well my recommendation is gtx 1060 or maybe 1070, depending on your usage, budget, etc. probably 1070 is better option rather than 1060, if you use it for long term, or maybe if you want the overpowered one then you could get 1080, or titan x pascal if you are insane type of person in gaming lol. but 980ti shouldnt be a problem if you want to save a bit, but it is not as efficient as nvidia pascal architecture graphic card, just stay away from overclocking graphic card if you want long life graphic card
