Hey people!

I bought this laptop about a year and a half ago. It's been great, honestly, but I had to take it to a computer shop for a hard disk change.

Since then, my cpu has been throttling out of this world. Literally, I play a game for about a minute or 2, cpu clock speed's about 2.57ghz, then it will suddenly drop to 0.78ghz. Framerates would just drop from 100 - 10 real quick.
I'm like so triggered and pissed that I can't play my game at the framerate that I want
Sorry for dem bad english, it's not my main language.

i7-4720hq
960m 4GB
16gb ram.

Hope you guys can help.

Solution

Probably because of Intel speed stepping. It will dynamically change the frequency depending on the task. If you're sitting at the desktop at idle it will be around 800Mhz - 1500MHz. Enable high performance mode in power options and it will constantly stay at 2.6GHz and boost depending on how many cores are being utilized. Also make sure your temps are in check.

The thing is, enabling high performance mode makes it even worse.

Can you monitor your cpu and gpu temps?
Use software like msi afterburner and hw monitor for this. Play a problematic game and give us the temps as well the temps when the pc has been doing nothing for over 10 minutes. This seems like an overheating issue.

Played planetside 2 and here's what i got:
initial temp
cpu-68c
gpu-66c
played until it started lagging
cpu-80c
gpu-78c

I also noticed at the bottom that it started to use my cpu insted of my gpu.

There we have it. The laptop either has a layer of dust in front of the vent or when the hdd got replaced someone loosend the cooler a bit and now it's no longer properly connected. Try cleaning out your laptop with some compressed air by opening it up an blowing into the vent and into the fan a lot (do keep the fan from spinning fast as this can damage it).

Solution

It is not as I have a laptop with the same cpu and at 100% load (it's my 3d quick render slave pc) it flattens out at 2.97-3.08 ghz. All thats happening here is the cooling failing and the cpu adjusting itself so that it doesn't kill itself.
