Can corrupted files damage hard drives while transfering? Second dead hard drive with this situation

I have an old external hard drive where I kept 1 TB of files as backup (photos, old games, videos etc). I bought a new computer and wanted to transfer all this data to my new 3 TB internal hard drive (I do have another SSD 500GB as primary Hard drive).
So I started copying some files and I noticed that sometimes it will slow down or stop copying a file (especially on torrent games), which makes me think I have some corrupted files on the external hard drive. So I just ignored the files and continue transfering. At one point my hard drive just died. I could not see it on Windows anymore, and I can´t even boot my pc while the Hard drive is connected (even though is not my primary boot drive). It just makes some strange noises (its physical) and wont let windows start. I can see the name of the hard drive on the bios Motherboard but it wont inform the amount of space it has.
Now i got a new external hard drive as the old one is acting weird (sometimes won´t connect) and tried to transfer the data from my the old to the new one. Apparently my old external hard drive kills every hard drive that I transfer data to because same thing happend. I transfered some data and at one point Windows couldn´t recognize this new external hard drive anymore. After connecting and disconnectig the cable many times in different PCs, safely removing it though windows and waiting a while, I manage to make the PC see the new hard drive again but it doesnt last long. I can open a file or two and then explorer will crash and makes the PC unusable until I remove the hard drive physically (then everything works again right away). I´ve tried to format the hard drive while windows could still see it but its not working and its makes some strange physical noises that reminds me of the other dead hard drive when I attemp to format it.
So I guess my old external hard drive is damaging hard drives when I transfer data, I didnt know this was possible. As I said, I have some Torrent Games so I though it could be a virus? But I am very careful with downloading torrents, I always check all the feedback to make sure Im not getting something harmful. But even if that was it, then shouldnt the old external hard drive die too? Or can just corrupted files damage hardware?

Hi,

I have seen that before. This is due to an electrical issue on the PCB (printed circuit board) of your old hard drive...If you plug it to a motherboard it can just kill your computer or other drive connected to it.
This is due to TVS chip being damaged or useless, you can see what they look like on this picture
