I have a mate who I built a PC for and it's been used for gaming and is running well, but the CPU is limiting the GPU, so I have decided to find him a new CPU/Mobo combo.

Currently, he has
Intel Core2 Quad Q9300 @ 2.5GHz
8GB PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 960 Mini

I have reccommended him the Intel Core i7 930 but I need to find a cheap LGA1366 motherboard.

My other option would be a LGA1156 i5 750. Anyone have any reccommendations? I am in the UK.

Thanks!

Why an old socket and platform if you can grab something newer, more cost, performance, and power efficient than that?

An 4th gen i3 could beat that old first gen "nehalem" i7
Take this for reference:
http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-930-vs-Intel-Core-i3-4130
Although that comparison isn't fair enough because it was based on synthetic benchmarks but you should realize that chip is going old and can't keep up with today's standard.
1st gen i7 also tends to run hot and very power hungry.

You can recommend your friend to get any H81 motherboard and i3-4130 for brand new.
H55 motherboards are quite rare to find factory new, especially X58 boards are more hard to find. Unless its okay for you to buy used boards at local online auction...

These lga 1366 boards are getting more and more rare and the prices keep going up (cheapest decent boards are at least 100+ pounds). Best I can recommend you is that he saves up and gets one of the new hyperhtreaded Pentiums or you look for a sandy/ivy bridge combo on ebay.

I can only recommends this for i5 LGA1156, since the choice are very limited:
