Can I add an extra 2GB ram on top of my 8GB dual channel. Are there any downsides to this?

Hello,
I currently have a 2x4GB A-DATA DDR3 1600MHz @CL11 on my PC.
I have an extra 2GB DDR3 1600MHZ @CL11 Kingston KVR16N11S6/2 sitting in my shelf, that was used from a different PC, but I replaced it it with a different ram stick. Since the 2gb kingston is unused, I thought of adding some more juice into my pc. Is it bad if I put it on my motherboard (Asrock 970 extreme3 2.0) The two sticks of A-DATA is dual channeled

I would say it will do more harm than good.

You would lost your dual channel function which is not worth the increase of 2 Gb. For me 8Gb dual channel is better than 10Gb single channel.

I dont know whether your mobo supports flex memory, if it supports then the 2 sticks will run in dual channel and the odd one will run in single channel mode. Though there wont be much of a difference in performance when all the sticks are running in single channel because you will be having 2 gigs more of RAM.
