Hi - I have a noctua dh-15 that I know is seated right with arctic silver. At quiet CPU cooling and 4.5ghz I hit 72 c. At turbo CPU cooling and 4.5 ghz I hit 67-68c max. If I oc to 4.8 ghz I get 80-82 c. I don't want liquid cooling because I find the radiator too loud

I called intel to see if that is too hot given I used to have chips like i7 4930k or 6600k and I never saw temps on air cooling above 60c.

The intel rep said because they are new people don't understand that Kaby lake runs much hotter and tha anything under one hundred centigrade for the package is ok

My system recovers very fast as within ten seconds of ending a game it comes down to the fifties centigrade

Is it true that eighty centigrade is ok for kaby lake and perfectly fine? Please let me know only if you specifically have experience and knowledge of kaby lake given the intel tech guy saying it is just different than last gen and runs hot

Thanks in advance

Solution
Yes. Kaby Lake runs hot but also hits a higher frequency. It was normal to hit 4.5Ghz on Skylake but 4.8Ghz on Kaby is doable but at a higher temp. Don't be alarmed. Intel claims this is "optimization" and we all see it as higher frequency at higher temp.

loginuser9999,

Q: What is your Core voltage?

Q: What is your ambient temperature?

Here's the recommended operating range for Core temperature:

80C Hot (100% Load)
75C Warm
70C Warm (Heavy Load)
60C Norm
50C Norm (Medium Load)
40C Norm
30C Cool (Idle)
25C Cool

Core temperatures up to 80C are safe.

The following is from SiliconLottery.com, where they bin CPU's and offer de-lidding service: https://siliconlottery.com/collections/frontpage/products/delid

"Temperature improvements vary depending on processor sample and architecture. Temperatures under an overclocked load (1.3V-1.4V) will decrease anywhere from 5° to 25°C. Typical temperature improvements are listed below:

Ivy Bridge: 10°C to 25°C
Haswell: 10°C to 25°C
Devil's Canyon: 7°C to 15°C
Broadwell: 8°C to 18°C
Skylake: 8°C to 18°C
Kaby Lake: 12° to 25°C"

I purchased a 5.0 GHz i7 7700K from Silicon Lottery. At 1.368 Vcore and 22C ambient temperature, my hottest Core running Prime95 V26.6 Small FFT's is 73C using a Cooler Master TPC 812, which is a high-end single tower air cooler that is slightly less capable than your Noctua NH-D15 at a much lighter weight. I also owned a 4.8 GHz i7 6700K, again purchased from Silicon Lottery. The hottest Core was 67C under the same conditions with 1.400 Vcore.

Previously I owned an i7 4770K at 4.7 GHz, which I delidded myself. The hottest Core was 69C at 1.300 Vcore. I also owned an i7 3770K at 4.6 and 1.300 Vcore I delidded with similar results. Prior to delidding, Core temperatures were ridiculously high, well into the 90's.

All the processors listed above by Silicon Lottery are TIM'd, whereas the 2nd Gen Sandy Bridge and previous processors are soldered. In my opinion, Sandy Bridge processors were the last mainstream desktop processors released by Intel that were thermally consistent, predictable and well behaved.

Intel moved away from soldering, because they used "Indium" in their solder, which has a relatively low melting point and high thermal conductivity, but is an exotic and expensive element. Thermal Interface Material, or "TIM" is inexpensive, but has a relatively low thermal conductivity (1/8th to 1/10th) compared to Indium. A Dow-Corning compound was used on many processor variants.

You might want to consider sending your CPU to Silicon Lottery, where they will delid it for you.

Also, you might want to read this Sticky: Intel Temperature Guide - http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1800828/intel-temperature-guide.html

Pay particular attention to Section 10 - The TIM Problem.

Hi frend, i have the system with Kaby Lake too. My system: Main Asus Maximus ix Hero, CPU 7700k, LIQUID CPU COOLER cosair H115i... and my cpu temp is about 32 C with Cosair Quiet mode, it hit about 50 C or more if load game, then i change to cosair balance mode and the temp is about 50C or < 50 C. i think the COSAIR H115i is good for CPU 7700k, and it's sure silent in quiet mode, in balance mode is not too loud, still ok

Dude I have the same CPU and cooler, I paired them with Noctua fans 1500rpm ones. Weird thing is I never see the temps go below 34, even just in BIOS, overclock or not, max fan speed or not. Do you think there's something wrong with my cooler?

Hello Guys,
Ever since I upgraded my PC I noticed the same problem. After spending such a big amount of money I was going crazy becuase of this. My old i5 4670K temp was 26-30 idle but my new i7 7700K was 45-55 idle temp.
After two weeks I realized that my 7700k was always loaded at least 15%. I checked my processes and there I found JAVA using a 15%. Now my 7700k temp stays at 32-34c idle. :)

Asus ROG Maximus IX Code Z270
Intel Core I7 7700K
Corsair Dominator DDR4 3200MHZ
ASUS Strix GTX 1080 (AE)
DeepCool GamerStorm Captain EX 360 (3 intake fans + 3 out take fans)
Fractal Design Define S
3x2 intake fans at front + 1 intake at the bottom and 1 outtake at the back.

I have always considered but I have never done it. After disabling JAVA temp stays OK 32 to 36 seems to be cool for a i7 7700k.

I have the 7700k in an ASUS ROG Maximus IX Hero, Corsair 100i v2 cooler, I can only have 1 pull fan on my radiator, front mounted because I was silly and bought a small case. However, 30C idles at 4.5GHz. I'm just have a few more things to order like custom cables, and i'm going to rebuilt into a corsair 750D case with all magnetic levitation fans.

I expect to be able to really push overclocking. I will say though I don't have any mad noise from the radiator. If you really want to look at overclocking within reasonable temps water is the way to go. I wouldn't even think of it without.

Came here to look at what temps are reasonable and I'm quite impressed, though I will look at more articles to get some averages. If 80C is the threshold then I'm laughing.

what exactly do you find loud about the radiator? the fan? the pump? if thats the fan, get a 120mm water cooler. and install your noctua fan on it. so youll still be running 1 fan. i have a h100i with 2 noctua a12x15 fans. no noise unless at full speed. if its the pump, i think you might be over thinking how loud it is. depending on your case, you will probably never hear it. the only way you would hear it, is probably in an open test bed.

2) i also recommend delidding. either check craigslist for someone who lives in your area with the tools or send it in. i got kind of lucky. i was selling some computer parts on craiglist and started talking to the guy. he told me he had that 88 tool. he did mine for free. i trust delidding because i did my own 4770k a few years back as well.

the delliding helps with the spikes (my 7700k has temp spikes). and overall brought it down at 15 - 20c. i idle 30-32c. and at 4.9ghz it reaches 60-62c. and thats in my hot case. if this was in my storm scout 2, im sure it would NOT break 60c. i have a phanteks evolve now, which is known to run really warm.

My i7 7700k on a Z270 Gaming Pro Carbon with a dark rock pro 3 Cooler. Idles at 27c and when gaming gets no hotter than 55c.
The only thing that concerns me is that at idle my temps go from 27c to 30c to 42c then 28c and sometimes back up to 51c. I have re-seated the cooler with new thermal paste, I have updated all drivers and the bios, I have tried everything to fix this problem. I have even tried new fans on my chassis, different fan profiles and other little tricks I was told to try. And I have noticed that every time Microsoft pushes a windows 10 update it messes with my temps and causes different fluctuations on idle. Does anyone have a solution for this issue yet?
