Partially corrupted hard drive

Hello,
recently I have been experiencing this issue with my external hard drive. When I wanted to copy an .avi file, the drive lagged and could not copy a byte of data. When I tried it with other files, for example .rar or .jpg, it worked as it should. In the case of .mp3, they are being transferred at abysmal speeds, but eventually get copied. It almost seems like that some files have been selectively corrupted, preventing me from accessing them. Also, when I plug the HDD into TV, most of the .avi files can be played without issues.
When I ran chkdsk, it got to roughly 75% of the first stage in a couple of minutes, but then it slew down and could not make another 1% in an hour.

Note which files are affected and skip them from your backup until you're done recovering everything else. If you have anything important on the drive, start with those first since there is no telling how much longer you might have before the drive quits working altogether.

I feared that this is the case. Is there anything I can do to recover my data, though? Because even Recuva can't get past those ~25% of unaccessible space.
