I currently have a HP Z600 Workstation as my main computer.

Config:
-- 2 x Intel Xeon X5570 / 2.92Ghz / 8MB Cache
-- 16GB PC3-12800 Kingston RAM
-- Currently (Nvidia GT440 1GB DDR5)

I am wanting to upgrade my Video Card, I play a ton of StarCraft 2, Which brings me to my question.

If i upgrade my Video card on this machine to say EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 SC 6GB GDDR5, how much performance would increase with the given Processors in use?

I have read a lot of the whole i5 and i7 for gaming and yada yada yada. What is the reason for this? Can my dual Xeon Workstation handle say extreme or Ultra settings with a much better graphics card with the Xeons? Since StarCraft 2 is so damn CPU heavy.

Solution
Since StarCraft 2 is so damn CPU heavy.
Starcraft 2 hammers the heck out of only two threads. It is not written to take advantage of CPU setups with more cores.

Many games are actually coded similarly. So, in these instances, having a processor with a much faster single-thread benchmark fares better for gaming at consistent and high framerates.

Those Xeons are great at multithreaded tasks where both can be opened up and all the threads put to use. However, their single-core performance is definitely on the slow side, and that can hinder gaming performance more dependent on CPU performance.

the gt 440 is a ancient gpu, it is not a gaming gpu

it will be from no gpu and no games to all the games you want

now, the problem is the psu on that pc, the gtx1060 will require a 6 or 8 pin power connector, does your workstation psu have that connector?

Thank you, very simple and easy to understand easily. Now just a small follow up question. Why is it that games are written this way? With the computer industry long been pumping out multi core processors, you would assume they would follow this trend. Unless not doing so for a specific reason.

the market is composed by old and new pcs, the game you mention was made in a time when the dual cores cpus were the main target, on 2010 there were still on sale single core cpus, keep that in mind when picturing the pc market we live now

also, a 4 cores cpu is expensive for most users, this days still intel pushes 2 cores cpus and prices around 100 dollars, a cpu that barely can run some games, other games will not run for the lack of more cores

your xeons will work well, especially with a gpu in the machine, even if some cores are not used, the others will be used as much as possible and you have 4 cores per xeon and not 4 weak cores

Yes it does have that connector. Will upgrading the GPU give the game better graphics performance in the realm of the Physics, shaders, and post-processing? I am wanting to run the graphics on full Ultra or Extreme settings. Or at the very least. High on all settings.

the gpu will help on other games alot , not on this one based on the experiences from other users and from what dudeman wrote previously

still, it will not harm to add the gpu that helps for other games

on some games like that, the cpu is what matters the most, and as you see, a i7 will do basically the same
