I have an Asus Laptop -> HDMI -> Sony AVR Receiver -> LG TV (Picture), 5.1 Surround (Sound). When I play my music or videos over this input I get just a 2.1 stereo output. Realtek HD Audio Manager speaker configuration is greyed out and won't let me change the stereo output to 5.1. Thus, leading me to believe that my Realtek isn't recognizing the HDMI->AVR -> 5.1 surround.(my receiver will give me every other input in multi-channel / dolby 5.1 DTS / Pro Logic II, so im guessing its not my receiver.) I have tried reinstalling the driver, updating it etc. As well as making sure the correct 5.1 setting is selected in control panel -> sound -> right click -> speaker configuration.

No luck thus far....Help!!!

Not sure it's the same for laptop, but desktops usually have 2 Realtek Audio chips: one built-in on mobo, and the other on GPU. If that would be the case, you would need to access the right Audio Manager (the one that governs GPU chip settings).
Or it could be problem with HDMI cable. Check if the one you have supports 5.1 sound.

So im pretty sure my hdmi cable supports 5.1 as it supports 4k and 3D and with my old receiver (which was plugged in Laptop > HDMI > LG TV > Optical Cable > Receiver) and it worked then....Sound quality is much improved with the new receiver. Makes sense that I need to manage my GPU (GeForce GT 745M) since im using the hdmi out. Not sure how to manage audio from my GPU though, or which output manager effects that....

Its not next to it, Intel(R) Display Audio is next to it. NVIDIA is under display adapters..... If it helps I have turned off "pass-through" on my HDMI settings on my receiver. And when I do an surround audio test on youtube, the right back and left back play through the right front and left front speakers....

so the place I see Realtek High Defination Audio is under sound, video, and game contollers. But the only other thing there is Intel(R) Display Audio....Does this mean I need to download a driver or something

If I take pass-through off that means it shouldnt matter whether or not the LG TV has 5.1 pass through right? Since the the hdmi goes from my laptop to the receiver before the tv....right?

You can buy a sound card and an optical cable. Connect sound card to the receiver. It will play 5.1. It will be independent from the video. You can do it assuming you have Windows 10. Not sure about other operating systems. Turn off the TV speakers.

yeah, that works.... :)

but im not completely satisfied, not sure why it should matter, and I dont have arc so now I have to use an optical out, which is fine but I hear it can be slightly lower quality, im also now not using the receiver's upscaling and filtration.....

I was replying to you and not evongugg....

So when I do Laptop->HDMI->Receiver-> 5.1(Audio) & LG TV (HDMI Picture) it doesnt work in 5.1 only 2.1

When I do Laptop -> HDMI -> LG TV -> Optical -> Receiver (AUX Input) it works in all settings (Dolby, 2.1, 5.1, multi channel etc.)

Even when its working though, Realtek still shows only stereo 2.0 and wont let me configure to surround 5.1. So its still not reading the hdmi audio out of the gpu. So i guess the receiver is converting the signal from 2.0 to 5.1? Seems like its still an issue with realtek and the audio out via hdmi eh?

Possible. Try running surround test. If receiver converts signal you would not get the correctly placed sound.

Ahh silly me I thought your TV had 5.1 sound system :)
