So I've had this computer which I built around 3 years ago. Recently had the original motherboard die which was a
ASRock Z87M Extreme4 LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
So decided to spend a bit more to have room for expansion and upgrading later on and went with a
ASUS ATX DDR3 2600 LGA 1150 Motherboards Z97-A/USB 3.1
I replaced the motherboard and found that only the disk drive is being detected neither the ssd which has my operating system windows 8.1 or the hdd are showing up. I know the drives are still working and the cables are good. I've also tried different sata ports on the board and only the disk drive is detected from any of them. I've tried disabling fast booting and disabling and disconnecting the disk drive.

My build:
Mobo: ASUS ATX DDR3 2600 LGA 1150 Motherboards Z97-A/USB 3.1
Ram: G.SKILL Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866
Gpu: EVGA SuperClocked GeForce GTX 760 2GB 256-bit
Psu: EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G 80 PLUS GOLD Certified 650W
Cpu: Intel Core i5-4670K Haswell Quad-Core 3.4 GHz LGA 1150 84W
Ssd: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 2.5" 120GB
Hdd: Western Digital Blue WD10EZEX 1TB 7200

Looking for any help or insight on what to do. I've searched a bunch of threads but haven't found a solution that works for my particular issue. Thanks in advance for the help!

Update: reset cmos using jumper no change
Reset cmos by removing battery no change

Hey there.

Try updating your BIOS/UEFI if you have available updates to see if that changes anything. You should also give those drives a try with a different computer, just to be 100% sure that they're working properly.
Trying out a different drive with your mobo could prove useful, to see if the same thing happens again. If you still have no luck, I'd suggest that you get in touch with the motherboard manufacturer's customer support to see if there's anything else you could try or if you need to RMA the mobo.

Hope that helps.

Hey Boogieman_WD

So I had perviously checked the Asus support site and found

https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z97AUSB_31/HelpDesk_Download/

The Bios version on the mobo is the same as what's on the website for Windows 8.1 64bit

Z97-A/USB 3.1 BIOS 2801

Also not being able to boot up, how would I apply updates to the bios? The mobo came with a cd but when I try to run it from the disk it brings me to a cmd prompt like screen. With no options leaving me just having to shut down the pc.

The reason I know the drives work is because I originally had brought the computer to verify what was wrong to a local pc shop because I work to much and dont have a bench test setup and they tested everything and found the motherboard was bad. I'm going to give asus a call when I'm out of work to see if they have any insight into what could be causing the issue.

Updating the BIOS/UEFI could be different for different brands, but you should have an option to "flash" your BIOS/UEFI, which would mean to do it via a flash drive without the need of an OS.
The BIOS/UEFI has nothing to do with your OS so it doesn't matter if you're running Windows 7 or 8 or 10 for example.

Let me know how it goes with the call.

So I talked to asus support they had me try booting with no Gpu and one stick of ram to see if it was a compatibility issue, no change. Back on with them to see if there is anything else they can try for a solution.

Update: after speaking to the 2nd support tech and running through everything I've done. They said the next thing to try is formatting the drive and reinstalling the OS.

Would that effect the drive being seen?? I have information on the drive that I would like to save if possible so I would rather not have to do this if there is any other options.

When you say it can't be seen, do you mean when you go into the BIOS you don't see the SSD or the HDD listed?
I don't see how a previously working SSD and HDD suddenly need to be formatted to show up in the BIOS.
What happens if you disconnect all drives but the SSD, does it show in the BIOS?

Yes in the bios the only thing listed on the sata ports is the disk drive.

And that's the same thing I was thinking, I know the brand of motherboard that was in the computer was different but no drives even show up.
When only the ssd is connected nothing shows up on the sata ports or Bootable drives.

Tried switching cables still nothing, the disk drive is still the only thing the motherboard can detect.

Update: going to head to the store to grab a cheap new drive and see if that can be seen. So I can see if it just happens to be a compatibility issue with my drives because they're not formatted and not have to format my drives for no reason.

Not exactly sure what failed on the old board. One day I shut it down the next morning the fans would turn on but no display or power to any usb's. I knew when buying it that it wasn't the greatest board and had read a lot of mixed reviews on it. But had the computer check out by a local pc shop and was told everything was working other than the motherboard. Then I replaced the board now the display and everything else works just not able to detect the drives now.
