Hello,

I'm a first time poster on tom's hardward and i've recently built myself a new pc after many years of only running laptops.

I've purchased a windows 10 64/32bit USB copy and I'm having a lot of trouble working out how to install it so that the install drive (an ssd) is formatted to GPT and not MBR.

I've set just about everything I can to UEFI in the bios/uefi menu. I hope my vocabularly isn't too lacking. seems a lot has changed in the 10 years since i built my last custom pc.

I've done a fair bit of looking around and tried formatting the drive to GPT using 'diskpart' through the command prompt before selecting a drive to install to when booted from the windows 10 installation media (USB).

Seems the guides on the web all involve downloading the ISO and using 'rufus' to format the usb to uefi? In any case, if someone could provide a solution for me to install the copy I've purchased such that the SSD is GPT it would be much appreciated. (I know there isn't that much benefit over MBR but it's fun to learn and marginal gains add up).

Some system specs if they matter at all:
core i5 7600k
gigabyte z270mx gaming 5
Corsair LPX vengeance 3000MHz (2x4gb)
samsung 960 evo 500gb NVME

I had to use Rufus to burn Windows 10 as GPT onto a USB stick, then the install went on to the SSD as GPT ok.
I guess the USB stick you got is formatted for MBR install and that seems to be where your problem is.
Do you have the Windows 10 licence key to activate it ?
Anyway, you could download Windows 10 build 1607 using the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool (link below), then burn it with Rufus as GPT

Thanks! That worked perfectly. There seems to be very little information around this stuff on the web.
