i5 series for upgrades[NEED HELP]

Which i5 series i should buy for my next upgrade ? an i5 7600K ? Whats the difference on each series of i5 ?

I'm using a GTX 970 card and H110M-PRO VD-D3 board.

Your motherboard natively supports 6th gen iCore CPUs, which in this case would be i5-6600 (K version for overclocking, non-K - not). https://ark.intel.com/products/88191/Intel-Core-i5-6600K-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz

Since 7th gen core iX uses the same LGA1151 chip, your motherboard would need a BIOS update to support a 7th gen i5 CPU, which would be https://ark.intel.com/products/97144/Intel-Core-i5-7600K-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-4_20-GHz

The difference between these to i5's isn't really noticeable. In 7th gen i5 gets ~0-2 more fps than the 6th gen i5.

P.S. 6th gen = skylake, 7th gen = kaby lake.
Get whichever is cheaper, i guess, they are both good CPUs

Be absolutely sure about the motherboard model.Try finding bios updates under support section or downloads section. You should get a zip file.Make sure you do it correctly. Updating bios is a critical thing and if it fails your motherboard becomes useless.

It is easy to update BIOS now days.
Just download MSI LiveUpdate 6 and from there you can update BIOS.After it starts update just let it go and dont try to close or touche anything, when it is done it will restart PC. It is pretty much few click and some time waiting for it to finish.

If you can get i5 7600 since it is no use getting K cpu when you cant OC.
Also have you looked into used i7 6700, i think you can get them just a bit above new i5 6600k/7600k.

Don't look into K-processors at all because your mobo can't OC. You need to look into the best value non-K CPU if you want one.

Wait before upgrading either the CPU or motherboard, AMD Ryzen releasing in a few weeks. They might have better options for the price.

I think the best option would be to buy the i5 6600k. It a good processor, and can be overclocked. You may not need to upgrade the bios. Its the least hassle option, and should be cheaper than the 7th gen processors. AMD processors are good but compared to i5 they fall a bit behind. Lets not forget the extra power consumption/heating. Plus you will have to buy the motherboard with the processor.

7600k overclocks bit better and is hotter few °C, and have support for 4k Netflix i think.No other major differences.
