Hello, i have a few sata drives laying around and i was thinking of buying an enclosure to be able to use them as portable drives. I have one 3.5" seagate barracuda and i went to bestbuy to checkout an enclosure they had. Unfortunately, the enclosure has a power cable which is not really what i wanted. So the question is: is it possible to get an enclosure for a 3.5" or a 2.5" sata drive that is fully portable (meaning it will work through USB and no other power connections)? Thanks in advance and i apologize for my ignorance.

Solution
A 3.5" drive will require a power cable to the wall. USB can't support the needed power.
Some 2.5" spinning drives will require power from the wall.
All SSD's can run directly off USB in the enclosure.

Ok so i should be able to get a 2.5" portable by buying an enclosure and throwing in a 2.5" drive? And from my understanding using a hard drive should be faster for transfering data around my pc's, is that right?

As said ...some 2.5" drives will work. Not all.

And for transferring data between systems? Why aren't you doing this across the LAN?
