I was given an old pc that I am using for testing and formatting an inventory of used hard drives. It is running Windows XP Home 32 bit, Service Pack 3.

The audio does not work and I wanted to get it working so I could play some tunes while running the hard drive utility.

I downloaded Everest Home edition and it does not detect an audio device. I also performed the following:

1. Entered BIOS and noted that audio was set to "AUTO."
2. Downloaded and installed Microsoft UAA driver.
3. Ensured that front panel audio connector was connected (eliminating need to jumper the pins on the connector).
4. Entered Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, Windows Audio to ensure startup is set to "Automatic."
5. Entered Control Panel, Sound and Audio Devices, noting "No Audio Device."
6. Entered Device Manager, noting no conflicts but also no audio device listed under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers.
7. Inspected board for swollen caps and burned spots. Visual inspection did not reveal any obvious issues.

At this juncture I suspect a hardware failure, but given how often the "no sound" turns out to be something else, I wanted to get some feedback to see if I overlooked anything.
