I am in the process of buying a gaming laptop and want to keep my budget below $2,000. I was wondering would it be worth it to get the MSI GT73VR Titan-017 with the i7 6820hk or the MSI GT72VR Dominator Pro-448 with the newer i7 7700hq. I plan to mostly do gaming, no video editing, or streaming.

Solution
They have the same theoretical TDP because they're based off the same architecture, but under the same load the 7700HQ doesn't draw as much, about 15% less actually.
I'll try and find where I saw this, I think it was on a review of a Kaby Lake laptop. :)

Their specs are pretty much identical 16 GB of RAM in both, they both have GTX 1070. The Dominator has a 256 SSD instead of 128 SSD. I'm sure since it's by the same manufacturer everything else is identical hardware wise.

Yes I already have a gaming desktop, but I am not home enough to really enjoy it. So while I'm away I can have something a bit more practical and not have to sacrifice too much in performance.

Right, sounds good.
The 7700HQ is the better CPU by quite a decent margin, disregard the SSD sizes since both will work just fine. You're only meant to use it for OS and software anyway, games only see decreased loading times from an SSD, nothing more.

So even with the 6820k overclocked the 7700HQ will still be a tiny bit faster?
