MSI Afterburner is not lettiing me use the steam overlay

The steam overlay wont open for any of my games ( in this instance squad). And I read it is because of msi afterburner. How do I keep the oc on my gpu (r9 280) while having the app closed?

Closing MSI afterburner doesn't remove overclocks. I think restarting your PC does, but IIRC there's a little dot you can tick off in the bottom left corner of Afterburner that says something like 'Keep settings on system restart', which will keep your overclock applied.
