Upgrading RAM, Which One To Buy?

Hey all, I am upgrading a buddy's ram on his pre-built ASUS PC. Right now he has 1 stick of 8gb that came with the PC and has room for one more.

When you add new ram even if identical could be incompatible. Won't know till you try and boot when adding modules.

8GB is fine as is, no need to go 16GB unless you have a 1070 or something.
If you're going to upgrade get a fresh 16GB kit.

I'd run this from Crucial memory:
http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/systemscanner
to get all the needed information, then get some memory from G.Skill, Crucial or Corsair. If you buy from Crucial, they guarantee it to be compatible, with the PC, not necessarily with your other module.

So you are saying that even if I put in another stick that is the exact same model it may not work?

There is no guarantee it will work unless they are from the same kit, and you generally end up spending more money buying the specific model you need in these scenarios anyway.
You're much better off buying a fresh 8GB kit.
