Hey guys.

This is my first time overclocking. I just upgraded my MoBo from Asus H170 to Asrock Z270 with i5 6600k processor. I'm also using a H60 cooler with a push and pull fan configuration.

Setup is:
Asrock Z270 K6 Gaming
6600k
GTX 1070
650 W gold+
16 GB RAM DDR4 2400

Anyway, right now, I'm running at 4.2ghz using the Asrock OC utility from the BIOS. My highest temp so far is 79C package. My idle temp is ~30C.

It looks too hot since it's only the 4.2 ghz mark. I'm pretty sure I put enough thermal paste and spread it correctly.

I'm using HWMONITOR while running Prime95. I also chose the 3rd option of torture tests in Prime95 which says tests everything including RAM.

Solution
the auto overclocking utilities tend to push way more vcore voltage than needed. Voltage is hugely affects temperature.
go to the bios and set the core voltage to manual. for 4.2GHz you should be able to use ~1.2v
with around 1.25-1.3 you will probably be able to get to 4.5GHz.

regarding temps, don't look at the package, cores are more interesting. you want them to be in under 75c (constant, short spikes are not important).

Also, for temperature testing (not stability), you want to use steady load.
with prime95, it is small FFT. Just be sure to use version 26.6 (later versions are not suitable for skylake due to incorrect use of AVX).

Hi, my OC'd i5 6500 have temp spikes too. Like it goes to 75c in a second but averages around 67c. I'm reading the package temps by the way because core temperatures does not show correctly on non-k OC. Is the temp spikes bad for my cpu? I was told that I need to keep the package temps below 70c.
