Code 43 - Windows has stopped this device from working because it has reported problems - GTX970/Win 10

Hi guys,

Today I've had some issues with my graphics card not displaying the correct resolution. Instead of displaying 1920 x 1080, the screen resolution has been stuck at 1024 x 768. Not sure how this came about, but when I was at my computer today I heard a USB ejection noise before the display changed. When looking at the Device Manager, I get Code 43 - Windows has stopped this device from working because it has reported problems. When I attempt to open Nvidia Control Panel, I get this message: You are not currently using a display attached to an NVIDIA GPU.

Not sure if a recent Windows update could be to blame, but it has worked fine up until today. I have also read that Code 43 is very vague.

Already explored troubleshooting methods:

  • Put a different card in (also GTX 970, EVGA though)
    Put my card in another system (this didn't work to begin with but after logging in, it fixed the resolution not long after and stayed that way, leading me to believe that it isn't the card)
    Changed PCIe slots
    Removed drivers and done a clean install using both GeForce experience and the driver installer from Nvidia.
    Checked by swapping HDMI, monitor, etc. HDMI was not plugged into motherboard while testing either.

Integrated graphics work perfectly fine, but obviously this is far from ideal when doing any gaming, editing, rendering or any creative work. If anyone has any suggestions or can help me out, I would be incredibly grateful. I'm not the best at troubleshooting so if you need any more information about the errors or my system please let me know too.

Writing to let people know that a critical Windows update occurred which led to the graphics card not working. I've done a System Restore to before the date and it seems to be working fine for now, so hopefully it stays that way.


Actually you are fairly good at troubleshooting. Some come here having done nothing. You've done much more than that. At this point I'd call the manufacturer of the card if it's still under warranty(usually 3 years). These errors, within the device manager, do suggest a hardware problem if it is recurring. My 970 FTW from EVGA is still covered for another 2 years and if I saw that error I'd get them on the phone and sort it out.

Haha okay, good to know :)
I was afraid that it was a hardware issue considering it was so sudden, but plugging it into another computer seemed to work so I wasn't sure. I still have another 2 yrs on my Gigabyte 970 but I hear that their support is horrendous so it should be quite the journey. Thanks for your help!

Have just updated the BIOS via USB and still no improvements. Thanks for the suggestion, however!
