I'm currently trying to OC my MSI aero GTX 1070 and using afterburner. I've successfully gotten it to 2012 MHz without voltage added with max temps around 73-75 (depending on the game). I have an i5-6600K OC to 4.4 GHz.

I'm wondering, is it safe to keep going up? What is the max MHz? I feel like I'm not getting much of a performance boost tbh and having trouble running battlefront and total war Warhammer at max settings.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I would google that specific card and see what others have achieved with it then plan your OC accordingly (testing it for stability obviously). If you are using MSI afterburner it will be pretty hard to damage your card, that being said don't go crazy. Just keep upping the clock speed/mem clock until you start to see artifacts or crashing, also watch temps to make sure you aren't thermal throttling. You can also adjust voltage but know that will lead to even higher temps.

73C-75C are fairly high but you probably won't see throttling until 83C on Pascal, that being said I wouldn't feel comfortable with my card in the 80's. Better cooling may be needed for higher OCing.

yeah dude I think GPU's is rigged mine is some freaking alien shit I swear I get 7fps boost avg on my overclock I feel like they make it where gpu's run hot on purpose to keep the cooling fan industry and all this water cooling stuff a thing lol
