VPN router setup or modem setup or both or none?

I will be the very first to admit that I am very limited with knowledge of network terminology and procedures. I do not want to upset my existing network by experimentation – it has been working flawlessly for more than a year. I do not trust the accuracy or the truthfulness of information utilizing any online chat with my Comcast ISP provider. I have chatted with Comcast more than just once to get them to turn off the COMCAST Wi-Fi hotspot broadcasting from my modem. Every time they have told me it has been turned off and yet it is still broadcasting. My Wi-Fi survey shows two networks that I have control of, one Comcast network, and (one unexplained network ???).

I am trying to determine:
(1) whether I can actually achieve my goal of a work-around of the NordVPN 6 device maximum connection using my router or modem or both;
(2) the technical setup steps to accomplish my goal (if it is indeed electronically possible with my specific equipment); and
(3) will my required setup make my telephone service inoperable if I am connected to a Nord server outside of the United States.

I have a 2-year subscription to NordVPN
I am located in the United States.
I own my modem – Arris TG862G
I own my router – D-Link DIR-655 version B1
My service is internet + telephone from Comcast.net

My household has 4 laptops, 1 Kindle, 1 iPad, 2 iPhones, and 1 desktop PC (plus access by guests on occasion). The Kindle, iPad and iPhones utilize my Wi-Fi when they are inside my house.

THANK YOU!

I would be highly shocked if any ISP provided...
What is your actual goal you are trying to accomplish here?

Adding a VPN does absoltly nothing to turn off the other wifi network, nor does it provide any additionalal security from devices on that wifi network.

I would request a phone gateway ONLY and supply your own cable modem for internet .

You can test if the other wifi hotspot can access your regually network by this.
1) Open command prompt on desktop and type ipconfig (what you want is the IP address of ethernet adapter)
2) Switch laptop to the comcast network (you may need to get credintals for it from comcast user account)
3) See if you can ping that IP address from step 1

Thanks for your reply. Sorry for my confusing, superfluous information. I only mentioned the other Comcast wi-fi network to validate my distrust of asking anything of Comcast. I am not concerned with that Comcast hot spot right now.

I do have my own Arris TG862G modem as originally mentioned. I am trying to learn if my "old" router model can actually be set up to connect to the NordVPN so that I have only one device actually logged on to the VPN with all of my other devices connecting to the internet through the router [via Ethernet or wireless, depending on their individual hardware]. I believe that my telephone will still function properly since it is connected to my modem.

I would be highly shocked if any ISP provided modem/router had VPN client ability, and even more suprising if it had the performance to do it.

Ideally you should get comcast to give you a seperate gateway for phone and have your own modem since you have your own router.

Next best option is to dissable wifi on arris modem and set to "modem only" mode (may also be called bridge mode).
Then your modem will have no more routering/wifi functioning.

Then you can setup your d-link to be vpn client: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r28880784-Info-DIR-655-and-vpn

Cant speak to how well that D-Link will handle it. My ASUS AC68U does a great job at managing VPN and I can specify which clients are VPN and which are LAN (the wife would not like her phone/laptop not working because the VPN connection is down).

Thanks for your reply. As I mentioned in my original post at 12:40, I have my own modem which is NOT provided by my ISP. I guess I will just have to try setting up my router and see what it can do.

If I keep my modem set as it now is at least for the time being, my phone should work okay.
