Hi, I'm trying to access a USB HDD connected directly to router 1 in the part of the house that has wifi coverage through router 2. I’d like to access the HDD via the VLC iPhone app which works perfectly when I’m in wifi range of router 1, but doesn’t work when I’m in wifi range of router 2. Bonus feature would be to access the HDD through VLC when I’m travelling. I’m unfortunately quite new to all of this but what I understand from forum posts is that the WAN address I can see in the router setup is not my public IP so I think I understand why FTP on VLC doesn’t work remotely.

I have the following setup with MyRepublic (Singapore) 1Gbps fiber internet: Firstly there is an Alcatel Lucent ‘optical network terminal’ (modem) connected to the building fiber termination point. The modem is connected via Ethernet to a 5 port switch. From this switch there are Ethernet cables wired to all rooms of the house. I have two routers connected to these Ethernet cables, and the routers are far enough apart that there is no overlap in wifi range coverage.

Router 1 is an ASUS AC1900 (RT-AC68U) router. I have a USB HDD connected to it on the router’s USB 3 port. I have a laptop connected to router 1, sometimes with an Ethernet cable, sometimes over wifi.
Router 2 is a TP-Link AC1200 (Archer C5) router, to which I have a Samsung SmartTV connected over Ethernet which works fine for Netflix etc.

In addition there are several phones (Apple and Android) being used throughout the house over wifi.
Everything works great for wired and wifi internet access.
What I would like to do is to access the HDD through router 2 either over wifi or devices plugged into router 2. Currently the HDD cannot been ‘seen’ by VLC or other apps I tried when in router 2 wifi range, and the long term idea is that I eventually connect an Ethernet wired Kodi box to router 2 and the Samsung TV and that the Kodi box can access the HDD through router 2.

Unfortunately I cannot connect the HDD to router 2 or the TV directly as there is no space to do so without our toddlers being able to tear it down (and they would in 2 seconds!).

Is there a recommended solution to this? I have not tried to set one of the routers as a bridge or access point as I understand that there needs to be a direct Ethernet cable connection between the two routers (I could be wrong of course), and I’d rather not mess with the settings unless there is a good chance that it will work.

Note that the two routers are ‘indirectly’ linked via the Ethernet cabling in the house BUT with the switch in-between. I cannot link them directly as that would require running a cable up 3 flights of stairs.

Any suggestions and step-by-step instructions (for dummies!) how to solve this would be highly appreciated!

Cheers
