RAID 1 vs Ext HDD

RAID is not a backup. RAID is for preventing downtime. If you need your data to be accessible even if a hard drive dies, you want RAID. So it's mostly businesses who will lose millions of dollars every minute their file server is down who need RAID.

Even if you have RAID, you still need a backup. RAID won't protect you from an accidental deletion, or if you accidentally erase your resume and save the blank file over the original file, or if a ransomware virus encrypts all your files. A backup needs to be offline (disconnected from any computers after the backup is made) and preferably off-site (in case your house burns down).
