Hi, My WD Elements 1TB HDD has a very slow transfer speed (0-700kb/s) and when copying things from it, the transfer stops and it says "The item could not be found" I can still see all the files but if I try to copy, move or delete them it says "Item could not be found". I am on windows 10, my drivers are all up to date and I have tried on another computer which resulted in the same thing happening. Any suggestions?

Also sometimes if the hdd connected when booting or shutting down it will take forever

Thanks

Hi Tawp866,

I am sorry for any inconveniency caused by your WD drive. Do you have important data stored on the drive? If you do not have, try formatting the drive. Does the issue remain? I would run the Command Prompt and type the following command:
Chkdsk L: /r

Replace the L with the drive’s letter. Wait for the process to end and check again if there are some changes. I would strongly recommend you to test the drive with another USB cable. Updating the drivers and testing on another PC was a really good idea. Unfortunately, there may be a drive related issue. Please check your WD Elements condition, using Data Lifeguard Diagnostic. I leave you a download link directly from the WD web page:

Please make sure the data is backed up before using the tool. Let me know if there is any progress!

Hope this helps

Hi, thanks for the reply. I just downloaded Data Lifeguard Diagnostic and it says the SMART status failed. I then ran a quick test which also failed. This was the results:

Test Result: FAIL
Test Error Code: 06-Quick Test on drive 2 did not complete! Status code = 04 (Unknown failed test element), Failure Checkpoint = 96 (Unknown Test) SMART self-test did not complete on drive 2!

Also I clicked the notepad icon to view SMART data and all have ticks except "Reallocated sector count"

Unfortunately, The Status Code =O4 may indicate a problem which prevents the normal connectivity between the computer and the drive. Your data is backed up, right?
I would run the extended test. It may require some more time but you may get more detailed information about the drive’s condition. Is the drive under warranty? If it is, you may be able to get a drive replacement. I leave you a link below, where you can check your warranty directly from the WD web page:

I have backed up most of it, but there a couple things I can't get off the hdd because its keeps saying Item not found randomly. Is there a tool or something to do that or will I just have to keep trying and yes it is still under warranty so would I need proof of purchase or would the link you provided be enough to get a replacement.

Thanks alot for helping btw

When it comes to data recovery, there are a lot of tools. Some of them are free and are quite useful. I leave you a link with some suggestions:

In order to use the warranty, call the seller and ask for assistance. He may require some documents to verify the purchase and the warranty conditions. Another option is to use the warranty condition directly with Western Digital. If you have used your serial number in the link below and you it has been confirmed that the drive is under warranty, you may ship the drive to WD and get a replacement.
In general, the second option may require more time, so I would start by contacting the seller first. If you need more information or assistance with the WD warranty, contact the WD support:
