Am I Safe To Overclock?

I've never overclock before and i'm looking to do it because my CPU i feel is really the weak point of my compter and is letting me down in some games that rely heavily on it.

THIS is my current build, the only thing i'm worried about is whether my cooler will be able to keep the cpu cool, i dont want it overheating and causing any damage.

If anyone thinks i am able to overclock what do you recommend i overclock to, i dont want to push it to far but i want a decent overclock.

It's safe, the short answer is NO, you need to take care of what you are doing.

Take an overcloking guide, and follow the steps but limit youself at 1/2 of max increments in the values they put as limits.

For exmaple if the guide ask for a voltage of 1.431250v for 4.5Ghz with a multiplier of 22.5 you could start with 1.39 or something like that 1.39v-1.4v and a 4Gz with a x20.

Then stress the system and check the temperatures, you must aim for sub 65º values.

As far as i known the default values for 4.5Ghz are x22.5 and 1.431250v. Don't try to surpass those values, specially the voltage that is the easier way to burn the Cpu.

You should be able to, maybe not any record setting overclocks, but some. Just google overclocking fx 6300 on asus m5a97 r2.0 and start doing a little research. I did a quick search and many things came up. One issue you "might" have is cooling of the VRMs, sometimes AMD boards start to overheat when overclocked and a lot of people recommend CPU coolers that blow air onto the board. You'll find that out during your research.

I assume you mean CPU overclocking? If so, there's nothing to stop you overclocking, but the budget PSU is concerning. It delivers plenty of power, but the cheap Taiwanese capacitors and temperature rating of just 40°C don't instil much confidence.

There's no set figure or setting when it comes to overclocking. You need to read guides and understand what you're doing before you dive in, otherwise you will damage something.

Ok thanks, one more thing, how can i monitor the temperature of my cpu once i overclock it, and at what temperature (if it does reach said temperature) should i start to get worried or give it a break to cool down?

also remember that on some cases your mainboard will not let you do much and if it does, the performance gains are limmited, in some cases you gain a 10% extra performance, some report 30% maximum

that is done by generating more heat, more noise form the fans and consuming more watts from the psu

it is a process that stresses many parts so start slowly to see what you can achieve

Ok guys thanks for all the help, i've watched many difference OC guides and have downloaded a program that allows me to monitor the temps and also has a overheat protection feature which alerts me when the cores are reaching un-safe temps.

Thanks for all the help
