I've recently purchased a 240 gb SSD and would like to replace it with my current 500 gb HD.
A friend of mine told me recently that I cant do that and would end up losing all my current data and that I would need a SSD with a capacity of 500gb equivalent to the HD size.

So apparently now if I want to upgrade to an SSD I have reinstall all my applications and as for all my other files (music, movie, etc...) I have to copy and move them to the SSD.

Is this claim true ? If it isn't could someone please guide me through how to upgrade an SSD with minimal effort.

Solution
As long as your SSD is bigger than the used portion of your hard disk you will have no problems. Remove the hard disk, install the SSD, then follow this procedure to do an Internet install of the OS and restore your Time Machine backup. (Note: this is the way to do it, not a simple drag-and-drop.) http://www.idownloadblog.com/2016/02/25/how-to-start-up-your-mac-in-internet-recovery-mode/

You should encounter no problems with this but, just in case, you still have your original system untouched on the hard disk.

Edit: I'm not entirely clear whether you already have a Time Machine backup. If not, then you will need an external hard disk, 500GB or more. Follow the instructions here to produce the backup...

You will need to reinstall the OS. As for your data, you will need to transfer this to the SSD.

Minimal effort?

Plug the SSD in, format it and then download the OS you want to use and install it onto the SSD. Then drag your data across.
