Do I need to reapply thermal paste?

Hello,

I am in a dilemma. I recently bought and assembled my first computer. I bought an i5-6500 with the stock Intel heatsink fan.

When installing it on the motherboard, I noticed that one of the legs was wobbly while the other 3 push pins were firm.

I tried to push the wobbly pin down as hard as I could without putting a lot of stress on the motherboard, but it was still wobbly. So I figured, well three solid legs is good enough, so it should be good.

A couple of days later, I read online on how to properly seat an intel heatsink, so I opened the computer up, removed the heatsink, pushed down the wobbly leg and its corresponding opposite leg down first, then pushed down the other two.

Now all 4 legs are very firm, and I am glad that I did that cuz it gives me some peace of mind.

Now onto the question (thanks for bearing with a long read): Did the heatsink reinstall screw my thermal paste covering on the cpu? Will I need to clean the cpu out and buy new paste and reapply?

No, you do not need to reapply thermal paste. There is a very little difference compared to fresh and used thermal paste, and as long as it is not hard and dry, it is fine.

Hello,

I just wanted to give you guys an update. I ran the Prime 95 v26.6 small ftt's (or whatever its called) test for about 10-15 mins. The max temp that any single core reached during that time was 54 degrees Celsius. So I'm going to assume that the heatsink is properly installed with the paste.

Thanks for your help.
