So later today I'm gonna go to the shop and build my second pc. My old one got old and bla bla bla.. So I've decided to build a new one.

I'm going with an evga gtx 1080 superclocked, asus rog strix z270e motherboard, 16 gb ram led, 1 tb hard drive.. As you can see I have a nice budget, but here's the question..

Should I get i5 7600k or i7 7700k for my build? I've read that games are more gpu intensive and that spending more on a cpu will bring little benefits if I'm only using my pc for gaming. Would I be able to game with high-ultra settings with the i5?

That i5 is more than capable and yes you will be able to game on ultra settings with that. It is correct that the majority of games benefit from a better GPU and you will see a much greater increase in performance with an upgraded GPU. But there are games such as ArmA 3 which do use quite a lot of CPU power.

If you have the money you could get the i7 but the performance gain you get from buying it will not be very proportionate to the amount you spend on it.

1. This decision depends on two factors:

a) What will you be doing .... pure gaming box or gaming + workstation apps
b) Budget

If budget is not an issue, than the decision is simple, get the 7700k, you will realize a slight benefit. OIf you do video editing or something like that, the i7 will pay significant dividends and , if you have budget concerns, they are worth setting aside. If I put you in front of two boxes, one with an 7600k and one with 7700k, both overclocked, I'm sure you couldn't tell the difference, even tho if benched, I'd expect better numbers from the i7.

2. With the 1080 Ti about to drop, I'd hold off on the 1080 ... when the 780 Ti came out, the 780 dropped $160.

3. The SC series is one card we do never recommend. Since the 5xx series the SC has historically been a reference PCB with a nice cooler. Unlike Asus, Giga, MSI ... there are no VRM, chokes, thermal pad improvements over the reference design and the initial thermal design was deficient in both the 9xx and 10xx series. Later "fixes" addressed the Thermal design errors, but the weak VRM and other componentry remained.

What resolution and Hz will you be gaming at? In high fps setups the i7 can bring some gains in a few games but at 60Hz (4k) there would be virtually no benefit. However if your spending that much on the rest of the system the price difference between the i5 & i7 is negligible.

Im purely using this pc for gaming.

Right now I'm using my plasma tv as the screen and I don't really know the resolution and hz...

Besides that then which gpu would you recommend, that evga 1080 sc, or a cheaper zotac 1080 amp... Or a pricier asus strix 1080? Which combo i5/i7 would be better with which gpu that I mentioned?

Btw, thanks for the help guys.

Interesting, so would you say going for a 1070 would be better for my situation?

I've got the budget to spend on an i7 and 1080, but heck, If a cheaper i5 and 1070 will give me excellent results, all while making me spend less, I'm down for that. Didn't know that info on plasma tvs, and for that I'm grateful.

Other that that what else would you recommend? If im getting that 1070
Then I'm adding an ssd, and maybe some leds just for the aesthetics.

Keep one thing in mind, people will always tell you to go for i5 if it's just for gaming but they tend to forget that on PC we have games that are extremely cpu-demanding, for example an i5 7600k will often find itself falling below the 60fps on RTS, Open worlds games etc even coupled with a gtx 1080 (at 1440p) if you're not that much into these type of games then yes just go for the i5 and if you're not interested in 1440p (even on a 1080p monitor it is an awesome AA solution and imo it's worth it) then get the 1070 to play at 1080p

edit : Also if you like ubisoft games, even at 1080p an i7 will often save you from a lot of frustrating framerate drop
