This is my current setup:
Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 R2.0
GPU: MSI RX 480 Gaming X 8GB
CPI: FX-6350
RAM: 8GB
PSU: 600W

I have one monitor connected to rx 480 through hdmi. I also have two vga monitors lying around and I also have old GeForce 9400 GT and two vga to DVI-I adapters. Would it be possible to connect GeForce 9400 GT to PCIe x1 and use it for my two vga monitors? If so, would it have any impact on gaming on the main monitor?

Solution
The above is wrong you can absolutely do that but its a waste of time, and sometimes a pain to get working.

The RX 480 has multiple outputs and you can use 2 of these to connect 2 monitors:

Much easier than using another card, avoids the fact the drivers for that card are ancient and any other conflicts.

And yes you can game on 1 while you run the other 2 on desktop or whatever with no performance issues.

You can't make an nVidia card and an AMD card work together.

I don't want to make them work together. I want to make them work separately for different monitors. And I don't want to play games on multiple monitors.

You can't. The only thing you can do with AMD+nVidia in the same system is switching from AMD to nVidia and vice-versa when a game is optimised for nVidia or for AMD. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqkI7bOfRkA

I second the idea of using an active adapter to have your 480 run all the monitors. In almost any scenario, using one videocard is a better choice than trying to use multiple cards. This is why videocards are now made to run multiple monitors with one card. If stringing a couple of old random cards together got the job done then people would be doing that.

Trying to use two different videocards in a non SLI/Crossfire setup is a very convoluted way to do things. If you are just looking to tinker around with your computer then try it, no need to ask if it works when you'll see for yourself.

So I decided to try it and for anybody wondering it did work with some tinkering with drivers.

When I booted my pc first time and opened device manager I saw my rx 480 and Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. So I installed drivers for my 9400gt. No change. So right clicked on Microsoft Basic Display Adapter -> Update display software -> Browse my computer for driver software -> Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer -> Then I selected GeForce 9400 gt and restarted my pc. After that everything worked.
