Intel i3-8100 vs Ryzen CPU 7th Gen

Solution

Likely not unless Ryzen is another Bulldozer style faceplant where it performs badly in anything that isn't very heavily threaded and doesn't scale across very large numbers of cores easily. That's why the i3s tend to beat out the 8 core FX CPUs, most software doesn't scale well up to 8 cores, and the FX cores individually are only about half as fast as Intel's at this point. In software with really good to perfect multicore scaling, the 8 core FX CPUs can trade blows with current i5s, but that is an ideal situation that doesn't show up much outside of synthetic benchmarks and video...

we don't know the full specs or know any true benchmarks yet on the Ryzen generation of cpus so it's impossible to answer your question currently
But as mentioned above I expect there will be a number of ryzen cpus that will out perform all or most i3 cpus

very unlikely.
unless intel do a step change like they did between core 2 and i series. the new intel i3 chips will have slightly faster single threaded performance over all.

but the r7 chips all have 8 cores and 16 threads (going by the leaked info,) so the r7 should still be the more powerful cpu as far as overall compute performance in any app that uses more than 2 cores.

like i said unlikely... intel spouted 15% performance improvements for last gen.
turns out that 15% was in specific situations.
in the real world they often perform exactly the same or worse than the previous gen for gaming. but show a marked improvements in certain benching apps.
truth is mate looking at the available info ryzen is gonna be a great cpu for the money,
you will be able to get an 8 core 16 thread cpu for under £370/$490 with there lowest price 8 core offering at £235/$316.
that performs on par (if current info is correct) with intels 8core 16 thread that costs £1000+.

IMO, intel just wont be able to keep there current linup at its current price, if ryzen starts taking market share.
they will either bring out a new gen, basically binning the 7series early.
or
they will drastically adjust the prices across there entire rage.

but thats speculation mate. only intel knows how they are going to respond to ryzen.
my guess would be a current range price drop then skip a gen on the roadmap then concentrate on 7nm and come back in 18 months to 2 years with a die shrink and 40% increase in ipc. if they manage that they could then start charging a premium again...

there is 1 other reason why ryzen will be worth it... no hardware encoded drm.(from what i can see)...
basically if you dont have a specific chip you wont be able to decode a specific drm*.
this locks the entire previous generations out making them prematurely redundant. #built-in-obsolescence

so yeah even if intel respond quickly things are gonna change in the market place for at least the next little while.

*i think intel may have shot themselves in the foot with this 1 as its anti consumer at its core

Seems you read the future correctly, 8th gen coming, and not much more than 7th gen, Intel is feeling the heat from Ryzen!

I would not be getting any 4c/4t cpu these days for gaming, in light of the excellent pricing on R5-1600 these days; many strongly suspect the new 8000-series i3 is just a rebadged i5-7300, etc...

Evaluate R5-1600 vs. 8600K in a few days...; otherwise, get the R5 if you can't wait 4 days..

yeah bruno, that kind of prediction comes from experience.
but its not magic or woowoo psychic stuff. its just paying attention over generations of hardware. pretty much any 1 can do it if they have a basic idea of hardware and enough time in the game. :) (37 years in my case)

@mdd no mate its not a rebadge. its just a generation iteration. same basic cpu core with added instructions or a dye shrink

Can I trust the benchmarks on https://browser.geekbench.com/ ?

I find it confusing, why does the i5 6400 get a higher score (multithread average top numbers) than the i5 7500 ?

That makes it even harder to choose for me....;(
