I have win xp pro on a HP Pavilion 525W Desktop PC. Connected this drive to computer via supplied USB cable. Bubble notification displays saying that the device was installed successfully and ready to use. However, it is not listed in the computer drives list, but it is listed in the device manager. There is no yellow symbol in device manager on this drive to indicate that there is a driver problem. Also, the drive is not listed in disk management screen. I have a seagate 2TB external USB hard drive and this computer has no problems recognizing and listing it in the "My Comptuer" folder. It is also listed in the disk management screen, but the canvio is not recognized. Any ideas on how I can make it work? BTW, The canvio drive is recognized and listed in the "my computer" drives list on another PC running windows 10 pro. Could this be a driver problem? I checked HP's support site for drivers for this pavilion computer but it is no longer supported on their website. Thanks!

Solution
The drive (taking in consideration the capacity) is formated in gpt almost for sure, xp operating system does not know gpt partition format, either you convert it in mbr and make 3 partitions ( 2 x 2TB and 1x1TB) because mbr table format does not allow a partition bigger then 2TB or you upgrade the system to at least vista.

Hi Nova43,

You are absolutely right; this could be a driver issue. The good news is that the drive is actually working, since you have tested it on another PC. Please check the hard drive manufacturer’s web page or the drive’s manual for some compatibility information. Is Windows XP listed there?

Do you have trouble accessing other USB devices? Open the motherboard manufacturer’s web page and check if there are any USB driver updates. To check if it is a USB port problem, download a Linux Live CD, boot from it and connect the external drive. Is it recognized?

Hope this helps

Bingo! I remember gpt was mentioned breifly in a blog article discussing the issue of unrecognized external HDDs. Thanks!

Thanks for the input R2D2_WD but I think Dragos' answer is the correct solution. Thanks all the same.
