Hi guys, was wondering if some of you guys could help me fix my PC issue.
My PC Crashes mostly on startup just after getting past the Windows loading screen and goes into green squares on a black background on both my monitors after I wait for a while it gives me a band but no error code. When I restart my PC you can see a lot of green lines even going trough the bios screen before you boot up
I think this is a GPU problem but not sure let me know if any logs or anything are needed Thanks
Here are the specs of my PC
CPU - i5-4690K
GPU - MSI GTX 970
Mobo - MSI Z97 Gaming 5
Ram - HyperX Fury 16GB
HDD - Seagate 2TB Barracuda
SSD - Samsung 850 Evo 120GB

More info would be helpful.
>What PSU you have (brand and model)?
>What monitors? How connected, what cables used?
>A pictures of those squares and lines would be nice.
>Is it brand new build or old one? If old, what hardware changes have been made recently?

For now, short answer would be it's either GPU or PSU problem.

sorry for the really slow reply but hope this helps

PSU = corsair CX750M
monitors are two samsung s22b300
will post pictures in a few hours or tomorrow when i get home
not new and last upgrade i did was the ssd witch was over 5 months ago and before that i upgraded my ram but that was around 7-8 months ago

Both monitors connected via DVI cable?
Are those green squares look identical on both monitors, or only similar?

Things you can try already and check if problem replicates:
> use only 1 monitor
> use different PSU if you can (yours in only Tier 4 so if it has few years, it's one of the suspects)
> also won't hurt to do antivirus scan just in case

green squares are identical and pc doesnt even boot up anymore have to go into safemode and even then there is green lines only around the black parts of the screen if that makes any sense and i only have 1 other power supply but its a 350 watt and i dont think it could power my pc and monitors are connected one with a dvi to vga converter and the other hdmi and ive tried using one monitor and it boots up fine and works like a normal pc somtimes only tho
and i am in the process of doing the anti virus scan now will let you know if it finds anything

One more thing to try is to try on-board GPU (you may need to go to BIOS to allow it to work with normal GPU). Connect one monitor to on-board, 2nd to GPU. If the BIOS won't let you do it this way, remove GPU and use on-board and 1 monitor only. If that works, try putting GPU back (remember to connect back power cables!).

well ive done a bit in the last while and here's how it went
first i decided to take out my gpu and i do have a second system with a really poor passively cooled asus card but i took the 970 out and replaced it with this now there are no green dots/lines and everything works perfectly (except i get 3-4 fps in every game) then since that worked i tried to put my 970 in my other pc and it powered up and booted fine but there was green lines but no crashing or anything just the green lines.
i also tried with no gpu and just off the integrated gpu and it works fine and there are no problems
so i am assuming this is a gpu probelm or could the green lines be a power problem since my other pc has a 350watt power supply.
and if it is a power supply issue what should i do to fix it? or is it not worth fixing and i may aswell buy a new one
i seen a few years ago people putting their dead gpus is the oven to fix them but thats just a myth right?

UPDATE:
when i was messing around with my pc i decided to put the old asus gpu and my 970 in at the same time i looked in my device manager to see what the asus card was even called and i saw my gtx 970 driver was there so i uninstalled it and restarted my pc and now my pc boots up and no green lines / dots and all is working fine but i dont know how long it will be like this for
could this of been the problem all along or is it a coincidence

If you carried out any recent driver updates, it could have been that which caused the issue, in not installing the driver correctly first time around. In future, if you are experiencing any problems that you believe to be regarding the GPU, then its always best to use DDU (display driver uninstaller) which will ensure that any traces of previous drivers are removed completely and then helps you reinstall clean.

My guess is that during a previous driver install, it run into problems when detecting the monitors....hence why it seemed to freak out when booting into Windows Desktop. If you continue to see any "green squares" or any other artifacts on your screen, then it could be a sign that the GPU is becoming faulty.

well it was working for an hour or so and like 10 minutes after i wrote the update the pc just froze again for about 2-3 minutes with green lines again then went to the green squares and restarted itself and then done the same as it always has and just boots up to green squares.
i visually inspected the graphics card and im not an expert but i think this may be the problem or maybe its normal for all cards
here is a picture:

here is the green dots:

[strike]That looks like a gnarly screensaver! Yeah I think you've discovered the cause of your problem. The IC is a power regulator. Since it only appears to be the one IC that is affected, you could easily repair that broken leg with some 22 gauge wire and deft soldering. Or you could buy a replacement IC on Ebay, but soldering the leg would be simpler.

By all means check the GPU in another system.....it would be disheartening for you to buy a second GPU only to find out that the problem is stemming from your motherboard or elsewhere.

Usually though,....when the artifacts start.....failure if the card is not far behind.

If it is artifacting after testing in another system.....you could attempt to "oven bake" the card (no joke) See this guide: Oven baking a GPU back to life...since you've nothing to lose if it is faulty. I intend to do this with my old 280X since it died in a similar manner.

well i have tried it in another system aready and i have gotten the same problems but weirdly enough it boots up and works fine on my other system but with green lines and dots but still working but kinda unuseable i would try to bake the card but maybe before that i could bring it to a pc repairs shop to see if they have any way of fixing the problem then if not or too expensive i will just try the bake method and hope for the best

so.. i was just about to bring it down to the repair place and just before i did i decided to just give it another 5-10 minutes to double check that i tried everything that i could since i was using the pc everyday like normal just using the on-board intel graphics and when i plugged it in i got the same green lines then green dots. so i went into the bios and left it there for a few min since i had to do stuff there is green lines on the bios also so when i exited the bios the pc had no green lines and no other problems booted up fine. i thought that when the gpu got those green lines and wouldnt boot up to a normal desktop it should be dead and wont work again? i dont have much hope on it lasting more than 1-2 days if it does it will be a miracle so i will wait until i get the green lines and boot issues before i bring it to a repairs shop.
